Pentagon says "aware" of China Internet rerouting
WASHINGTON - The Defense Department is aware that Internet traffic was rerouted briefly through China earlier this year, a Pentagon spokesman said on Friday, referring to what a congressionally appointed panel has described as a hijack. The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission charged in its annual report on Wednesday that state-owned China Telecom advertised erroneous network routes that instructed "massive volumes" of U.S. and other foreign Internet traffic to go through Chinese servers during an 18-minute stretch on April 8.
Groupon considers sale to Google: reports
NEW YORK - E-commerce coupon site Groupon Inc is considering selling itself to Google Inc <GOOG.O>, according to media reports on Friday. The two are in discussions about an acquisition for more than $3 billion, reported the technology blog AllThingsD, citing anonymous sources, on Friday.
Startup lets doctors enter prescriptions on iPad
BOULDER - Imagine your health hinging on your doctor's penmanship. That's a scenario ScriptPad is trying to avoid by offering physicians the ability to enter prescriptions directly into their iPhone or iPad. "It allows physicians to write prescriptions faster and safer than their current paper process," said Liam Davis-Mead, 31, co-founder and CTO of the Boulder, Colorado-based startup.
Oracle-SAP testimony wraps without HP CEO showing
OAKLAND, California - Testimony in a trial pitting Oracle Corp <ORCL.O> against SAP AG <SAPG.DE> wrapped up on Friday without former SAP chief and current Hewlett Packard <HPQ.N> CEO Leo Apotheker appearing. Closing arguments are slated for Monday. SAP and Oracle, which compete against each other in the market for software that helps businesses run more efficiently, are in court to determine the amount of damages for software theft by SAP.
RIM says confident of resolving India concerns
NEW DELHI - BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion <RIM.TO> said on Friday it was confident that India's security concerns could be resolved to their mutual satisfaction, and said it has consistent global standards for lawful access, which do not include "special deals for specific countries." India has threatened to shut off RIM's encrypted email and instant messaging services unless it gains access to them, in a campaign driven by fears that unmonitored communication puts the country's security at risk.
White House to push for tech policy action in 2011
WASHINGTON - The Obama administration will push Congress next year to move ahead on critical technology policies, the White House's technology chief said on Thursday. The White House will work with Congress on bills dealing with on patent reform, privacy and corporate taxation, said Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra at a technology forum hosted by the Politico news service.
Nokia says some N8 phones have power problems
BARCELONA/HELSINKI - Nokia, the world's top cellphone maker, said on Friday some of its flagship N8 smartphones were sold with a power fault that meant they switched themselves off. The success of the N8 -- Nokia's first real challenge to Apple's iPhone, more than three years after its launch -- is seen as crucial to Nokia's profit margins in the current quarter, analysts say.
Q+A: What happens when Web traffic goes through China?
SHANGHAI - A congressional advisory group said this week Web traffic to major U.S. corporate and government websites was routed through China for 18 minutes in April because of an incorrect signal sent by China Telecom <0728.HK>. The commission said it was unclear whether the incident was accidental but it affected other countries and amounted to the routing of traffic to 15 percent of all Internet destinations, going through China. China Telecom denied any hijacking of web traffic.
Dell rises on expectations of solid sales to government
- Shares of Dell Inc <DELL.O> rose 5 percent in pre-market trade on Friday, a day after the personal computer maker raised hopes that government and corporate spending was holding up and prices of PC components were falling. The company's comments about good demand at its federal customers come barely a week after Cisco Systems <CSCO.O> warned of weak public-sector spending.
Chinese activist sentenced for Twitter post
BEIJING - Chinese authorities have handed out a year-long labor re-education sentence to an online activist for posting on Twitter a satirical message urging people to attack Japan's pavilion at the Shanghai Expo. Amnesty International said that Cheng Jianping, who uses the online pseudonym Wang Yi, was given the sentence on Monday for "disturbing social order".
