Cathay's cargo, passenger traffic falls in March
AP - Wednesday, April 15
HONG KONG - Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., Asia's third-largest carrier, said Tuesday its monthly passenger and cargo traffic continued to slide in March amid low demand for business travel and a slump in global trade.

The number of passengers traveling with Hong Kong's flagship airline and its subsidiary Dragonair dropped 3.2 percent to about 2.1 million compared to the same month last year, Cathay Pacific said in a statement.
Leisure travel has held up well because heavily discounted fares were available to customers on long-haul journeys but demand for business and first-class travel remained low, the airline said.
"The slump in our passenger business continued in March, with overall passenger numbers and load factor both showing a fall from last year's high base, which included the Easter holiday period," said Tom Owen, general manager of revenue management.
Cargo and mail shipments for the two airlines combined recorded a decline of 13.7 percent, Cathay Pacific said, as the ongoing financial crisis continued to take a toll on the global airfreight business.
Fierce competition amid a shrinking market also put tremendous pressure on the company's cargo yield, the airline said.
