HP unveils ProBook laptop line
ADVERTISEMENT
SAN FRANCISCO - Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N>, the world's top PC maker, is launching a new line of inexpensive business laptops with fresh features targeting users at small and medium-size companies. The HP ProBook s-series, which starts shipping globally on Tuesday, is the company's new mainstream business notebook, following the release of its higher-end, lightweight EliteBook line last year.
Cablevision rolls out super-fast Internet access
NEW YORK - Cablevision Systems Corp <CVC.N> plans to roll out super-fast Internet access connections that can allow a customer to download a full-length high-definition movie in less 10 minutes. The New York-based cable operator said on Tuesday it is also doubling the speed of its Wi-Fi wireless Internet service -- free for subscribers -- as it steps up its offerings to counter the competitive threat of Verizon Communications' <VZ.N> FiOS service.
Facebook seeks to export its network across the Web
SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook regularly attracts more than 200 million people to its website, but the company is now looking for ways to permeate the lives of its users without the need to check-in to the Facebook site. The Palo Alto, California company unveiled tools on Monday that allow third-party Web developers to harness the wealth of content generated by Facebook users and to build new online products and services.
Pirate Bay lawyer files for retrial, cites bias
STOCKHOLM - Four men jailed for breaching copyright in connection with Pirate Bay, one of the world's largest free file-sharing websites, should be given a new trial because the judge was biased, a court heard Monday. Judge Tomas Norstrom's memberships of several groups for copyright protection should have disqualified him, the lawyer for one of the men, Carl Lundstrom, said in a document sent to the district court.
What cereal are you? Job interview queries on Web
NEW YORK - When is it OK to lie? What would you do with 100 Christmas trees in July? If you were a cereal, what kind would you be? Knowing that those and other questions await in an employment interview could have a huge impact on a candidate's chances of landing a new job and, beginning on Tuesday, a Web site called Glassdoor.com aims to provide that insight.
Samsung plans first Android phone for Europe
NEW YORK - Samsung Electronics Co <005930.KS> said on Monday that its first phone based on Google Inc's <GOOG.O> Android operating system would be available in major European countries Europe in June. The company said its 17500 phone has touchscreen controls and runs on networks based on HSDPA, a high-speed wireless technology popular in Europe.
Qualcomm to pay Broadcom $891 million to settle litigation
NEW YORK - Wireless chip supplier Qualcomm Inc <QCOM.O> agreed to pay smaller rival Broadcom Corp <BRCM.O> $891 million over four years to settle long-standing and increasingly bitter legal battles over technology patents. Qualcomm, which has lost several key battles in patent infringement cases with Irvine, California based Broadcom in the last few years, said on Sunday it would make its first payment of $200 million to Broadcom in the current quarter.
UK rules out government database of emails, phones
LONDON - Britain has ruled out a controversial proposal to set up a government database to store Internet and telephone traffic, saying it prefers to have such information held by private companies. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith says the data is needed to combat terrorism and other crimes. Critics have called the idea excessive and an infringement of civil liberties.
FTC says Internet firms near "last chance"
WASHINGTON - Companies that track consumer behavior on the Web for targeted advertising without proper consent are near their "last chance" to self-regulate, the head of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said on Monday. Privacy advocates say regulations on big phone and Internet companies, such as AT&T Inc <T.N> and Google Inc <GOOG.O>, are too lax, giving the firms excessive control over consumers' personal information.
Apple "say on pay" motion approved by shareholders
NEW YORK - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> said a shareholder proposal for more say over executive pay was approved at its annual meeting on February 25. The iPod, Mac and iPhone maker originally said it believed the resolution had failed. But it said on Monday that it had incorrectly counted abstentions as "no" votes.
