Singaporean man gets 18 years on terror charges

By ALI KOTARUMALOS,Associated Press Writer AP - Wednesday, April 29
JAKARTA, Indonesia - A Singapore man who told a Jakarta court he met Osama bin Laden many times was sentenced to 18 years in prison Tuesday for killing an Indonesian teacher and plotting an attack on a bar frequented by non-Muslims.

Mohammad Hasan bin Saynudin, 36, was defiant as he was led into the South Jakarta District Court, saying he was proud of his actions and ready for whatever punishment he was handed down.
"You can throw me in jail," he said. "But my son will just follow in my path."
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has been hit by a string of terrorist attacks in recent years blamed on Southeast Asian militant network Jemaah Islamiyah, which is believed to have been partially funded by al-Qaida.
More than 240 people have been killed since 2002, many of them foreign tourists.
Saynudin _ arrested with nine other Islamic militants and a cache of weapons on Sumatra island in July 2008 _ admitted to many crimes during his four-month-long trial, including helping mastermind a foiled plot to hijack a Russian Aeroflot plane and crash it into the terminal at Singapore's international airport in 2001.
However, the case that wrapped up Tuesday focused only on terrorist acts committed in Indonesia.
Judge Haswandi said Saynudin was guilty of orchestrating the fatal shooting of a teacher in front of the victim's 9-year-old son in 2007 and trying to kill two Catholic priests in 2005. He was also found guilty of planning an attack on a bar on Sumatra that was called off at the last minute _ apparently after the men realized it might unintentionally kill Muslims.
"He (and the other militants) damaged the image of Indonesia," the judge said in handing down an 18-year sentence for violating the country's anti-terrorism laws and possession of illegal weapons. "Furthermore, he's never shown any regret or remorse for what he's done."
The same panel of judges sentenced two Indonesian men for collaborating with Saynudin to 10 years and 12 years in prison on similar charges.
The Singaporean told reporters he considered himself a "Muslim hero."
He said he met bin Laden on "countless" occasions when the two were taking part in military training in Afghanistan, but provided no time line. He called the al-Qaida chief "the savior of the Muslim world," and said he supported his goal of killing Americans.
Jemaah Islamiyah, severely weakened by hundreds of arrests, has not carried out a major attack in nearly four years, but the arrests on Sumatra highlighted the lingering terrorist threat. Saynudin was said to be a key member of the regional network.
