Home  |  News Briefs  |  U.S.  |  World   |  Celeb Buzz  |  Entertainment  |  Sports  |  Business  |  Health  |  Sci / Tech  |  Politics  |  Weird & Offbeat     Feb 17 Highlights Of Low Points In U.S. Economy February 17, 2009 8:14 p.m. EST Linda Young - AHN Editor Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Tuesday brought news of more layoffs around the country. Even real estate mogul Donald Trump has had a rough time in this economy. Trump announced Friday he was stepping down as chairman of Trump Entertainment Resorts, the casino operating group. On Tuesday, Trump Entertainment Resorts reportedly filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Camden, NJ court. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenneger said he would mail layoff notices on Tuesday to 20,000 state government employees because the state legislature failed to pass a budget by the Monday night deadline. State lawmakers need a two thirds majority to pass the budget. Sticking points center on the need to raise taxes, as well as slash spending, to close a $42 billion budget gap. California's state government reportedly might avoid layoffs if even one Republican switches sides and votes for the budget. Here is a roundup of some of the most recent lay offs around the country. Vehicle steering systems manufacturer Delphi Steering, the steering division of Troy-based Delphi Corp., announced 775 workers - 425 hourly and 350 salaried - will be laid off in the next few weeks. Pork processor Smithfield Foods will close six plants around the nation and lay off 1,800 employees, including 760 workers at its Plant City, FL facility in September. Florida has been hard-hit by the recession and its unemployment rate is already running above the national average, so absorbing almost half of Smithfield's layoffs won't help. Hotel company Gaylord Entertainment Co. announced it has cut 350 jobs, about half of that number was in Nashville, TN, where the company is headquartered. Farm implement maker Deere & Company announced it was revising the number of employees it placed on indefinite lay off at its John Deere Davenport Works this month upward from 190 to 200 workers. Municipal government West Warwick, RI's West Warwick School Committee announced it expects authorization Tuesday afternoon to send out layoff notices to 188 teachers, slightly more than half the district's teachers. Under state law, notices must be sent by March 1 in order for teachers to be laid off the next school year. District officials say they still hope to receive enough funding to avoid having to actually lay off that number of teachers. Tiremaker Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations announced it will lay off 67 workers at its Bloomington, IL on March 1. Home builder Winchester Homes of Bethesda, MD will lay off 60 workers this spring because of sagging home sales. Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond will lay off 55 workers at its Baltimore, MD, facility in April as part of ongoing consolidation of operations. Retail shelf, fixture and display manufacturer Lozier Corp. announced it will lay off 43 employees at its Omaha, NE, plant plus cut work hours for an additional 800 employees from 40- to 32-hours per week. Watchmaker Fossil Inc., announced it will layoff an undisclosed number of workers representing a $16 million payroll savings, which is 9 percent of its payroll costs. Fossil is also freezing hiring, bonuses and raises, citing slumping sales. Municipal government Haverhill, MA will lay off 13 to 15 employees, the mayor told City Council members Monday. Cuts include one or two firefighters and a police officer.
