Jon Corzine named state Sen. Loretta Weinberg his candidate for lieutenant governor over the weekend, a choice observers say the governor had been mulling and likely took after one of the biggest federal corruption sweeps in the state's history. The FBI arrested 44 political and religious leaders in New Jersey last week as part of its probe of a corruption and international money laundering conspiracy. Corzine announced Weinberg his running mate during an event at the Bergen Performing Arts Center. A self-described "feisty, Jewish grandmother" who has "never be accused of being part of any insider political club," Weinberg served as assistant administrator for Bergen County for 10 years before being elected to the Teaneck Township Council. She was a member of the New Jersey Assembly for 12 years and then became state senator in 2005. "I know it is tempting after the events of this week to write off government as totally corrupt, out of touch and not worthy of anyone's time or support," Weinberg said in her first speech as a candidate for lieutenant governor. "I have had those same thoughts more than once. But every time I have a thought like that, I re-double my efforts to fight. Now is one of those times when good people in government must stand up and fight." The mayors of Hoboken, Secaucus and Ridgefield, the Jersey City deputy mayor and council president, two state assemblymen and five rabbis from New York and New Jersey were among the 44 people charged by federal prosecutors last Thursday for accepting bribes and/or money laundering in a two-track case. The charges may prove detrimental to Corzine's already tough re-election bid, according to observers. With concerns growing about the economy and jobs, the governor, a former U.S. senator and chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, trails former U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie in polls. The 46-year-old Christie's campaign is primarily based on his successful, seven-year career as U.S. attorney for New Jersey during which he prosecuted more than 100 corrupt officials. The Republican announcement last week of Monmouth County Sheriff Kim Guadagno as his running mate is expected to bolster his anti-crime image while appealing to women voters. Christie in a statement sought to depict Weinberger as a "Trenton insider" who "has sponsored taxes and fees on everything from alcoholic beverages to dog licensing fees." Similarly, the state Republican Party called the longtime state lawmaker a " liberal legislative ally" of Corzine. One of only two gubernatorial races nationwide this year, the contest in New Jersey will include a candidate for lieutenant governor for the first time following a constitutional change.
