Palm lobs another volley at Apple in smartphone war
ADVERTISEMENT
SAN FRANCISCO - Palm Inc <PALM.O> has fired another volley at Apple Inc <AAPL.O> in their smartphone war, as the two rivals tussle over whether iTunes should be compatible with Palm's new Pre smartphone. Palm, whose executive ranks include former Apple brass, released a software update for the Pre this week that allows it to sync again with Apple's iTunes media management software.
Apple, labels work on plan to boost album sales: report
NEW YORK - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and four record labels are working on a plan to increase digital sales of albums, while the computer maker is also separately developing a tablet-sized device, the Financial Times reported on Sunday. Apple is working with EMI <LNDONE.UL>, Sony Music <6758.T> <SNE.N>, Warner Music <WMG.N> and Vivendi's <VIV.PA> Universal Music Group on the project, "Cocktail," with the sides hoping for a launch in September, the paper reported, citing unnamed sources.
Media moguls rethink Web advertising in downturn
PASADENA, Calif - The recession-fueled advertising downturn underlines the urgency of using the Web to glean data and target consumers directly, rather than blasting them with a barrage of TV-style ads, media executives say. At the Fortune Brainstorm: TECH conference in Pasadena last week, Walt Disney Co <DIS.N> Chief Executive Robert Iger opened a discussion about new ways to market to consumers, when he described himself as, "pretty bullish about what technology is going to allow in terms of behavioral tracking."
At 40, Comic-Con grows into family affair
SAN DIEGO - If life truly begins at 40, as the old saying goes, then after four decades the giant Comic-Con pop culture showcase is seeing a rebirth of sorts among a new generation of attendees -- families and children. Even as Hollywood travels here to hype their newest comic book movies such as "Iron Man 2," aimed mostly at teen boys and young men, this year's 40th anniversary of Comic-Con has seen older couples dressed as "Star Wars" characters looking for fun with their little stormtrooper children by their side.
Twitter to pitch add-on tools to businesses
PASADENA, California - Twitter plans a marketing campaign starting in the next few days to educate users, individual and corporate, about ways to make money off the popular microblogging site. Co-founder Biz Stone also told Reuters the company is not interested in acquisition talks with Google or any other company.

Investors dump brokers to go it alone online
NEW YORK - The collapse of Lehman Brothers last September marked the start of a downward spiral for big investment banks. For a smaller fraternity of Internet brokerages, it has set off a dramatic spurt of growth. Since the start of the financial crisis, $32.2 billion has flowed into the two largest online outfits, TD Ameritrade Holding <AMTD.O> and Charles Schwab <SCHW.O>, company records show.
Bill Gates to India: Go high end on R&D
NEW DELHI - Billionaire Bill Gates on Friday urged India to move away from low-cost labor toward high-end research and development to keep its giant IT sector competitive. On a visit to New Delhi, the co-founder of Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> called on the Indian government to speed up its commitment to R&D and to boost low number of home-grown PhD students.
News Corp sees MySpace as place for videogames
PASADENA, California - News Corp <NWSA.O> hopes to transform MySpace, which has been losing users to Facebook, into a stronger online videogaming platform as it works to reposition the six-year-old site as an entertainment destination. News Corp digital head Jonathan Miller said on Thursday he wants to expand the videogame platform on his company's sagging social networking site, which lags Facebook in number of users.
