Australian film probes mystery of dangling shoes
SYDNEY (AFP) - – An Australian filmmaker intrigued by the mysterious sight of sneakers dangling from power lines said Thursday he became so "obsessed" by the practice he decided to document its myths and meanings.
Matthew Bate's film "The Mystery of Flying Kicks" examines what he calls the "global Chinese whisper" of sneaker tossing, and was conceived during a visit to the United States in 2006.
It explores the mythology of slinging sneakers over power lines -- or "shoefiti" -- a pop culture phenomenon which Bate said had different meanings in different countries, stretching as far back as 1890.
"I heard stories about sneakers symbolising gang markers, drug dealing spots, murder sites and as a celebration of losing your virginity," Bate told public broadcaster ABC.
An ubiquitous urban symbol with wildly diverging legends about its meaning and origin, Bate said there were hundreds of thousands of blogs and websites devoted to shoefiti and its perennial question: why?
Spaniards and Argentinians described it as a "mafia" symbol, while in Sydney it was reported to be a rite of passage for boys who lost their virginity.
"The classics are that it's a drug-dealing spot... the other classic is that it marks gang territory, and that one's absolutely true," he said.
"What I liked about this story was that a seemingly random sneaker thrown on a telephone line now had the potential to be packed with cultural meaning."
Entirely comprised from "donated photographs, phoned-in theories, video, v-logs, and animation," Bate's film is due to screen at the Melbourne International Film festival next month.
