SAN DIEGO - Since he first caught Hollywood's eye with his directorial debut, the Mexican vampire film "Cronos," writer/director Guillermo del Toro has pursued the types of fantasy and horror films he would watch as a fan. His passion has led to the successful translation of the cult favorite "Hellboy" comic books into two blockbuster films and another comic book movie, Marvel's "Blade II." He had planned to work on the "Hobbit" movies, which he co-wrote with producer Peter Jackson, but delays forced him to shift his focus.
Simon Cowell sued by British "Talent" contestant
LONDON by a former contestant on "Britain's Got Talent", according to British press reports on Thursday. Cowell and his TV show are being sued by contestant Emma Amelia Pearl Czikai, who claims she was humiliated and degraded on the show in a broadcast in May 2009.
Freestyle dancer tWitch steps up into movies
LOS ANGELES - Freestyle dancer Stephen "tWitch" Boss may not have won the TV contest "So You Think You Can Dance", but he took the prize in the charisma stakes which is now paying off with a flourishing career in dance and movies. His engaging smile and oversized black eye-glasses earned tWitch the nickname Mr. Personality on the show in 2008, and helped secure his place in this season's "All-Star" group of returning contestants.
Disney picks Pixar's brains for Muppets movie
SAN DIEGO - The Muppets are getting Pixar-lated. Principals involved with Disney's upcoming live-action picture starring Jason Segel flew to Pixar headquarters in Emeryville, Calif., on Wednesday for a table read of the project.
Thriller with Natalie Portman to open Venice fest
ROME - "Black Swan," a psychological thriller starring Natalie Portman as a ballerina, will open this year's Venice film festival, organizers said on Thursday. The film, by U.S. director Darren Aronofsky, also features Vincent Cassel and Winona Ryder and centers on the rivalry between two dancers at a ballet company in New York.

Eminem leads U.S. album and singles charts
LOS ANGELES - Eminem's "Recovery" led the U.S. pop album chart for a fourth week on Wednesday, thanks to his latest hit single. The album sold 195,000 copies during the week ended July 18, taking its total to 1.5 million. He becomes the first artist to log a four-week stretch at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since Susan Boyle began a six-week stint in November.
Four actors join Paul Rudd comedy
LOS ANGELES - Hugh Dancy, Kathryn Hahn, Shirley Knight and Janet Montgomery have boarded the Paul Rudd comedy "My Idiot Brother," currently filming in New York. Rudd plays the title character, an idealist who during the course of the movie crashes at the homes of each of his three, more ambitious sisters, played by Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer.
Secret Mel Gibson text message may prove extortion
LOS ANGELES - After the disturbing Mel Gibson audio tapes became public earlier this month, Oksana Grigorieva sent a text to the actor explaining why she'd surreptitiously recorded their conversations, the Hollywood Reporter has learned. According to a source familiar with the case, Grigorieva writes in the text that the reason she recorded him was because "you broke your agreement with me."
