Consumer tech invades Davos, wider corporate world
DAVOS, Switzerland - Those discussing the "Shared Norms for the New Reality" in Davos this week need only look around them to see one such 'reality': low-cost smart devices are sweeping away clunky old computers throughout the political and business world. The 2,500 conference-goers hanging on every word from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and others will be tapping away at tablet computers and smartphones such as Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPads and iPhones and devices made by Samsung <005930.KS> and Motorola <MMI.N> running Google's <GOOG.O> Android software.
Microsoft sells 2 million phones in quarter
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> said on Wednesday it sold more than 2 million units of its new Windows Phone 7 software to handset makers last quarter, as it looks to counter Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone and the rise of Google Inc's <GOOG.O> Android system. The world's largest software maker, which launched its new phone software in October, licenses the technology to handset makers such as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930.KS>, LG Electronics Inc <066570.KS> and HTC Corp <2498.TW>.
Sony handheld to take on Nintendo DS, smartphones
TOKYO - Sony Corp <6758.T> is set to launch a head-on challenge to Nintendo Co Ltd <7974.OS> and Apple Inc <AAPL.O> with a new handheld game device that analysts widely expect to be unveiled at an event in Tokyo on Thursday. The consumer electronics giant has declined to comment on the agenda for the event, which comes the same day Nintendo is expected to report a slide in quarterly profit. Nintendo next month launches its 3D version of its popular DS model.
Intel wins EU approval for McAfee deal
BRUSSELS - Intel's <INTC.O> acquisition of data security firm McAfee Inc <MFE.N> cleared its last major hurdle after EU regulators approved the $7.68 billion deal on condition Intel grant rival firms access to its technology. World No. 1 chipmaker Intel said it now expects to close the acquisition, which it aims to use bolster the security of Internet-connected devices, before the end of the first quarter.
Coming next: Carry-along base station for travelers
HELSINKI - A technology startup backed by Google unveiled on Wednesday the world's first personal base station for international travelers, enabling them to cut roaming fees and make mobile calls like in a home country. Ubiquisys said the timing of devices reaching consumers depended on telecoms operators and it was in talks with several operators.
Mobile app industry to surge in 2011: Gartner
HELSINKI - Worldwide mobile application store revenue will almost triple to $15.1 billion this year, boosted by a surge in Google's Android market, research firm Gartner said on Wednesday. Apple created the market for mobile online software stores with the iPhone store in mid-2008, scoring an instant hit that drove smartphone sales and reshaped the way mobile content is delivered.
VantagePoint sees big clean tech deals in 2011
DAVOS, Switzerland - Up to 10 companies in the hot "clean tech" sector will go public in multibillion dollar U.S. offerings this year and as many will be acquired in equally significant deals, VantagePoint Venture Partners Chief Executive Alan Salzman told Reuters. One of Silicon Valley's preeminent investors in the clean tech industry -- Salzman's firm has backed electric car start-up Tesla Motors Inc <TSLA.O> and solar thermal company BrightSource Energy Inc, as well as others -- said in an interview at the World Economic Forum that the actions this year will be a validation of the sector's attractiveness to investors.
Facebook says no major changes in Egypt traffic
LONDON - Facebook is aware of reports of disruption to its service in Egypt but said it had not seen any major changes in traffic from the Middle Eastern country. Egyptians had complained Facebook and Twitter and other sites were being blocked and mobile networks disrupted. Egypt's government denied social media websites were disrupted, saying it respected freedom of expression.
Apple removes banned Nazi anthem from German iTunes
BERLIN - Apple removed a notorious anthem of the Nazi Party from the German version of its iTunes online music store on Wednesday, a German spokesman for the U.S. firm told Reuters. Named after a young party activist killed in 1930, the marching song "Horst Wessel Lied," was the unofficial anthem of the Nazis until it was banned in Germany at the end of World War Two.
Russia says Stuxnet could have caused new Chernobyl
BRUSSELS - Russia said on Wednesday that NATO should investigate last year's computer virus attack on a Russian-built nuclear reactor in Iran, saying the incident could have triggered a nuclear disaster on the scale of Chernobyl. Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's ambassador to NATO, said the virus that hit the computer system at the Bushehr reactor had caused centrifuges to spin out of control.
