The network’s marketing department has equated watching their supernatural drama, which stars Ian Somerhalder, to catching a “venereal disease.” Genius. But of course, The CW are denying that the text-only ads are mean anything other than “Vampire Diaries.” “VD simply stands for ‘Vampire Diaries,’ and anyone who thinks otherwise should probably get themselves checked out,” said a spokesperson. Checked out for a VD? There’s even a double meaning in the rep’s statement! The CW’s probably playing it safe after the Parents Television Council jumped on them for their racy “OMFG” ads for their other hit show “Gossip Girl.” But while the ad and its placement are extremely questionable (in between ads for The Disney Store in Times Square and Broadway’s “Mamma Mia), it is effectively getting people to talk about the show’s January 27th mid-season premiere.
