Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology US-TECH Summary Reuters - 2 hours 36 minutes ago Send IM Story Print Special Report: iPad striptease: It's what's inside that counts SAN FRANCISCO - The iPad will not hit stores until Saturday, but the race to unlock its mysteries started several weeks ago in San Luis Obispo, a picturesque college town roughly 200 miles south of Apple's Silicon Valley headquarters. On March 12, Kyle Wiens and Luke Soules woke up before dawn. Their plan demanded that they be among the first to get their hands on the device. Reviews praise iPad battery life, ease of use NEW YORK - Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad scored very well in terms of ease of use and battery life in its first reviews, but it won't obliterate the laptop computer market just yet, according to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Reviewers at both papers said that while the tablet computer, which goes on sale on Saturday, works nicely for Web surfing or consuming media like video and books, it may appeal less to people who need laptops for more heavy duty chores. VC fund for iPhone app developers doubles to $200 million SAN FRANCISCO - Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers is doubling the size of its fund for iPhone application developers, as it eyes new opportunities with the forthcoming launch of Apple's <AAPL.O> iPad. Kleiner Perkins said its so-called iFund investment pool now totals $200 million. The firm said the new money was not carved out from other funds, but instead represents fresh capital. Publishers bet future on iPad they haven't yet seen NEW YORK/LONDON - Publishers are placing big bets that Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad will kick-start a commercially viable transition to digital magazines and newspapers -- even though few executives have laid hands on the tablet ahead of launch. In fact, many publishers likely will not announce their iPad applications until after the tablet hits U.S. stores on Saturday, due to the many constraints that Apple has placed on allowing its partners access to the device. Amazon, publishers strike e-book pricing deal: report SAN FRANCISCO - Online retailer Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> has struck deals with two publishers on the pricing of electronic books, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. CBS Corp's <CBS.N> Simon & Schuster and News Corp's <NWSA.O> HarperCollins will be allowed to set their own prices for e-books under their agreement with Amazon, the report said. Nokia says wins China deals worth over $2 billion HELSINKI - The world's largest mobile phone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> said on Thursday it had won handset deals with distributors in China worth over $2 billion. A spokesman said one agreement was with China PTAC, worth over $1 billion, and the other was with Telling Telecommunication Holding Co. Ltd., also worth over $1 billion. Ford, Microsoft align to recharge cars NEW YORK - Ford Motor Co <F.N> and Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> on Wednesday announced an online application designed to help owners of Ford plug-in electric vehicles manage home electricity use while the vehicles recharge. Microsoft Hohm will be offered to Ford car owners for free, the two companies said at the New York International Auto Show. Ford will introduce five electric vehicles by 2013, starting with a Transit Connect Electric later this year. China Web filter rules risky for providers: USTR WASHINGTON - China's comprehensive Internet filtering regime for political, social or religious content is complex and opaque -- creating precarious conditions for providers, the U.S. Trade Representative's official said in its annual report to the U.S. Congress on Wednesday. In a report compiled before Google Corp <GOOG.O>. moved its Chinese search portal to Hong Kong from China this month in a censorship dispute, the USTR said: "changes to Internet filtering can occur without warning or public explanation." Some Yahoo email accounts hacked in China, Taiwan BEIJING/SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo email accounts of some journalists and activists whose work relates to China were compromised in an attack discovered this week, according to rights groups and foreign correspondents, days after Google said it would move its Chinese-language search services out of China because of censorship concerns. Several journalists in China and Taiwan found they were unable to access their accounts beginning March 25, among them Kathleen McLaughlin, a freelance journalist in Beijing. Her access was restored on Wednesday, she told Reuters. Want to see the iPad? So do Apple store employees SAN FRANCISCO - As Apple Inc <AAPL.O> gears up for the crush of customers expected for Saturday's iPad launch, employees who staff its retail stores are just as curious about the tablet as the fans who will line up outside. Apple store workers say they have yet to see or touch the iPad, even though the launch is just days away and they are being trained and encouraged to talk about Apple's newest device with customers.
