Indian-born artist Anish Kapoor looks at a scale model of his design during the launch of the "ArcelorMittal Orbit" sculpture at City Hall in central London. The twisting red steel tower will keep watch over London's 2012 Olympic Stadium.

LONDON (AFP) - – A twisting red steel tower by Indian-born artist Anish Kapoor will keep watch over London's 2012 Olympic Stadium, it was announced on Wednesday.

The 115-metre (377-feet) tower, complete with a circular glass viewing platform, which will stand 22 metres taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York, was chosen from 56 competing designs.

Indian tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, chairman and chief executive of giant steel company ArcelorMittal, is contributing 16 million pounds (18 million euros, 24.3 million dollars) to the 19.1 million pound project.

Kapoor described the tower, to be known as ArcelorMittal Orbit, as the "commission of a lifetime".

"I am deeply honoured to be invited to undertake this challenging commission," he said.

"I am particularly attracted to it because of the opportunity to involve members of the public in a particularly close and personal way."

About 700 people an hour should be able to go up the tower, which will give views over the stadium in Stratford, east London and the surrounding Olympic Park.

Kapoor was born in Mumbai and educated at art college in Britain before forging a career as one of the world's most distinctive sculptors, winning the Turner Prize in 1991.
