Artur Davis leads Democratic rivals in the race for governor of Alabama, but trails Republican contenders by double-digits, according to a new poll. Davis, who trails GOP rivals despite being the most well-known candidate in the race, is seeking to become the state's first black governor. According to Public Policy Polling, Davis leads state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks 38 percent to 28 percent. Sam Franklin Thomas, a local inventor, ranks last with 9 percent. The congressman, however, would lose in a match-up against any of the Republicans in the race. Bradley Byrne, former chancellor of the Alabama Community College System, leads GOP contenders with 27 percent. Former state Supreme Court chief justice Roy Moore trails in second with 23 percent, followed by state Treasurer Kay Ivey with 10 percent and businessman Tim James with 9 percent. The survey found that a general election between Davis and Byrne would result in a Republican winning 48 percent to 32 percent. A contest between Davis and Ivey, who has dropped out from the race this week, would have the same result, 44 percent to 33 percent. James, the son of two-term former Gov. Fob James, would also defeat Davis in a match-up, 42 percent to 33 percent. Moore would fare less convincingly against the Democrat but still win, 43 percent to 37 percent. Sparks would also lose to any of the Republicans but by smaller margins except for Byrne, who would win a match-up, 43 percent to 30 percent, the poll found. Davis has statistically the same favorability rating as his rivals. Twenty percent of voters view him positively, while 18 percent and 20 percent think the same of Byrne and Sparks, respectively. The congressman has the highest number of voters who view him unfavorably, at 35 percent. Only 18 percent think negatively of Byrne, while 20 percent feel the same way about Sparks. Conversely, Davis is the lowest number of voters with no opinion of him. Forty-four percent had neither a favorable nor unfavorable opinion of Davis, compared to 64 percent of voters who are "not sure" what to think of Byrne, and 60 percent for Sparks. James, who called the poll "a flawed set of numbers skewed to show overwhelming support for Barack Obama and Bradley Byrne," has 61 percent with no opinion of him. Davis is a three-term congressman who was first elected to represent the 7th congressional district of Alabama in 2003. Considered a centrist, he is a member of the New Democrat Coalition, a group of about 60 representatives that supports moderate, pro-growth policies. A classmate of President Barack Obama at Harvard Law School, Davis is one of only 34 House Democrats who voted against the administration's healthcare bill, an action that could affect his support among the 80 percent of likely Democratic primary voters who support the legislation. Despite his opposition to the measure, Davis trails Byrne 78 percent to 7 percent among general election voters who are against the bill, which was enacted last week. The primaries in Alabama are on June 1. The general election is on Nov. 2. Gov. Bob Riley, a Republican, cannot seek re-election due to term limits. Alabama is a historically red state at the heart of the Bible Belt, a region of Southern states known for their socially conservative evangelical Protestantism. Obama lost in the state, 39 percent to 61 percent, during the 2008 election against Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) despite turning many other red states, such as Virginia, blue, or Democratic. The 42-year-old Davis is only the state's second black U.S. congressman since Reconstruction. In addition, Republicans have won five of the past six gubernatorial elections in the state.
