ADVERTISEMENT Failure to comply with the government order could result in the removal of army chief Rookmangud Katawal, a move that could push the Himalayan nation into a political crisis. The main opposition Nepali Congress party has already warned it will protest in the streets and in parliament if he is forced out. Information Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara said an official notice was sent to Katawal on Monday, giving him 24 hours to explain. He did not say how the government would respond if the order was ignored. The army _ which was historically controlled by Nepal's king before the monarchy was abolished last year _ is now under the command of the president. But the army may be bucking the control of the new government, led by the country's former rebels, who were elected after laying down their arms and joining a peace process. The army has refused to allow the Maoists' ex-fighters and their commanders to be integrated into the national force _ as dictated by the peace agreement. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who leads the ruling Maoist party, asked the army chief to explain why new soldiers continued to be recruited after the army was asked to stop, why soldiers boycotted the national games earlier this month and why the army allowed eight fired army generals whose tenures were not extended by the government to continue working. Last month, the Supreme Court ordered the reinstatement of the top generals, a blow to the coalition government led by the ex-rebels. The Maoists gave up their 10-year armed rebellion in 2006 and joined a peace process. They confined their fighters in U.N.-monitored camps and locked up their weapons. They joined elections last year and emerged as Nepal's largest political party. Only the president has the power to remove the army chief. Dahal _ who met with President Ram Baran Yadav Monday _ told reporters that he informed the president about the 24-hour notice, but did not elaborate.
