Tom Ford's 'A Single Man' wins Queer Golden Lion at Venice
AFP - Saturday, September 12
VENICE, Italy (AFP) - - Tom Ford's "A Single Man," the story of a gay professor mourning his longtime partner, won the unofficial Queer Golden Lion for gay-themed movies Friday at the Venice film festival, organisers said.

"The jury was unanimous," the award's originator Daniel Casagrande told AFP following the screening of the fashion designer's directorial debut, an adaptation of the landmark 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood.
"They decided to give no special mention to any other movie" among the 14 under consideration by the five-member panel, Casagrande said, explaining that they were underscoring "the importance of the film and the gap between 'A Single Man' and the others."
"In the wrong hands, it could have been really cheesy," Casagrande added.
Starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, "A Single Man" is the first film by 48-year-old Ford, a former Gucci designer.
In an interview with AFP before the announcement, Ford said: "One of the things I always loved about Christopher Isherwood... is that he always has gay characters because he was gay, but you never see the gay character struggling with his homosexuality or being tortured by it."
He added: "I didn't want this to be a 'gay film.' It's a universal film, about love and connection... The character happens to be gay, so what?"
The Queer Golden Lion, established in 2006, is independent of the Venice festival.
"A Single Man" was among the last crop of three films screened Friday from among the 25 contenders for the main competition's Golden Lion to be awarded on Saturday.
The jury is chaired by Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee, the Oscar-winning director of "Brokeback Mountain", a movie about the forbidden love of two gay cowboys.
