Two wounded in ambush near Indonesia mine: police

 AFP - Saturday, September 12
JAKARTA (AFP) - - Two security officers were hurt in an ambush near a US-owned mine in Indonesia's restive Papua province, police said on Saturday.

The officers were wounded when shots were fired at a Freeport McMoRan bus they were travelling on to the giant Grasberg gold and copper mine, according to Papua police spokesman Agus Rianto.
"Two security officers have been hurt from an attack. One of them got shot in the leg and the other received a head wound from flying glass," Rianto said.
The attack happened on the only road linking the highland mine to the coast, where a series of similar ambushes have taken place previously.
"There were 12 security officers and two cleaning service personnel inside the bus," Rianto said.
Australian mine technician Drew Grant was killed in a July 11 attack, while a Freeport security guard and a policeman were killed the following day.
The Freeport mine sits on some of the world's richest gold reserves and the US company's local subsidiary is the largest single taxpayer to the Indonesian government.
Papua, a resource-rich region on the eastern end of New Guinea island, has been the site of a low-level separatist insurgency since its incorporation into Indonesia in the 1960s.
