Oprah aims for "mindful TV" in OWN network gamble
LOS ANGELES - She is already the most influential woman on television, publishes a magazine, has starred in movies, opened a school in South Africa and is one of America's biggest celebrity philanthropists. So why is Oprah Winfrey taking perhaps the biggest gamble in her life and launching a cable TV network this weekend? Because she believes people are hungry for shows that entertain, inspire and offer what she calls "mindful television."
"I AM intelligent", protests Paula Abdul
LOS ANGELES - Former "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul said that being perceived as stupid was one of the most annoying misperceptions people have about her. Abdul, 48, who returns to television next week with her own dance reality competition show, also insisted that she was naturally goofy and that her sometimes volatile public behavior was not the result of drugs or alcohol.
Snooki ball drop rescued on Jersey shore
LOS ANGELES - Fans disappointed that "Jersey Shore" star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi will not be placed in a large ball and dropped from a building during MTV's New Year's Eve bash from Times Square can rest easy. MTV confirmed on Thursday the Snooki ball drop will indeed take place, but at a new location: Seaside Heights, New Jersey, the original setting for the hit reality show.
"Poirot" star, golfer McDowell awarded UK honors
LONDON - Actor David Suchet, famous for his television role as detective Hercule Poirot, singer Annie Lennox and U.S. Open golf champion Graeme McDowell were among those honored by Britain's Queen Elizabeth on Friday. Top business figures granted awards included Roger Carr, the former chairman of British chocolate maker Cadbury Plc whose takeover by U.S. food group Kraft this year provoked strong feelings in Britain.
Boney M frontman Farrell dies in Russia: agent
MOSCOW - Boney M frontman Bobby Farrell was found dead in his hotel room in St. Petersburg on Thursday, the day after a performance in the city where the band rose to stardom in the Soviet era, his agent said on Thursday. "He did a show last night as part of Bobby Farrell's Boney M and they found him this morning dead in his hotel room," agent John Seine told Reuters by telephone from the Netherlands. Farrell was 61.
Contestant "haunted" by apparent wrong answer
LOS ANGELES - Gabe Okoye says the despair he felt on "Million Dollar Money Drop" was even worse than millions saw on the Fox gameshow - and countless YouTube views - after he appeared to give a wrong answer that cost $800,000. But the support his girlfriend Brittany Mayti has given him from moment one in the ordeal has carried him through -- even after the startling revelation, weeks after the taping, that he got the answer right.
A Minute With: Bette Midler on New Year TV special
NEW YORK - She has received four Grammys, four Golden Globes, three Emmys, and a Tony Award, and even after selling more than 30 million records, singer Bette Midler is still going strong. For over 40 years, Midler has delighted audiences with her bawdy live performances, and on December 31, Midler will be ringing in the New Year on cable TV channel HBO with her special, "The Showgirl Must Go On," which is the live stage show she has been performing in recent years at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Global concert box office tumbles 12 percent: Pollstar
NEW YORK - Box office receipts for the top grossing concert tours slipped sharply around the world in 2010, as music fans cut back on the number of shows they attended and top acts put on fewer shows. The 50 most popular tours, by artists such as U2 and Lady Gaga, grossed $2.93 billion worldwide in 2010, down 12 percent from 2009, according to concert industry magazine Pollstar.
"American Idol" hires Ray Chew as music director
LOS ANGELES - Among the changes for the upcoming tenth season of "American Idol" is a new music director to fill the seat Rickey Minor vacated when he left to lead "The Tonight Show" band at the end of Season 9. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Ray Chew, a veteran of television music shows, has been handed the title and is already hard at work coming up with arrangements for the new crop of contestants.
Jackson doctor defense may say singer killed self
LOS ANGELES - Lawyers for the doctor charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson could claim the pop star killed himself when a hearing begins next week, a prosecutor said on Wednesday. In a court session to discuss evidence in the case against Dr. Conrad Murray, Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said he believes it is clear defense attorneys are looking into that theory, which has long been a consideration.
