KARACHI, Dec 20 - Following is a list of events in Pakistan as well as news stories and press reports which may influence financial markets.

MARKET SNAPSHOTS
 
* Markets and banks in Pakistan were closed on Thursday and Friday because of Ashura, the biggest event in the Shi'ite Muslim calendar.
 
* The S&P clung to a two-year high on Friday as investors predicted a pause as volumes are expected to dry up in the days ahead, and after a 5 percent gain already so far in December.
 
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 7.34 points, or 0.06 percent, to 11,491.91. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 1.03 points, or 0.08 percent, to 1,243.90. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> rose 5.66 points, or 0.21 percent, to 2,642.97. [.N]
 
* Oil prices rose on Monday as forecasts for freezing temperatures in Europe and the U.S. Northeast this week looked to boost heating fuel demand.
 
U.S. crude for January delivery <CLc1> climbed 14 cents to $88.16 a barrel by 0315 GMT, adding to gains from the previous session. The January contract expires at the end of trading on Monday. ICE Brent for February <LCOc1> rose 17 cents to $91.84. [O/R]
 
* Gold rose more than half a percent on Monday with investors chasing the precious metal as the euro weakened against the U.S. dollar on concerns over euro zone debt and Ireland's bailout package.
 
Spot gold <XAU=> added $10.90 an ounce to $1,383.90 an ounce by 0038 GMT, but it was still well below an historical high around $1,430 hit earlier this month. [GOL/]
