South Korea would go ahead with live fire drills from a disputed island, local media said, despite threats of retaliation by Pyongyang and pressure from Russia and China to cancel the exercise. [ID:nL3E6NK01M] The won <KRW=> came under further pressure from a weaker euro amid persistent worries about the sovereign debt situation in the euro zone. The local currency was quoted at 1,167.0/7.5 per dollar as of 0110 GMT, compared with Friday's domestic close <KRW=KFTC> of 1,152.9. It weakened to as soft as 1,169.1, the weakest since Nov. 24, a day after North Korea's deadly attacks on a South Korean island. The South Korean unit found some support as foreign investors continued to buy local stocks and from exporter demand for settlements. "Growing geopolitical tensions due to the drills and persistent worries about the euro zone put heavy pressure on the won, but it will return to recent levels with demand from foreign stock investors and exporters," said an analyst at a local futures firm. Foreign investors bought a net 106.2 billion won ($91.95 million) worth of stocks on the main exchange after having purchased a combined net 1.21 trillion won during the previous five consecutive sessions. The benchmark KOSPI <.KS11> lost 1.31 percent. Currency investors showed muted reactions to the government's plan to impose a levy on bank foreign debt from 2011 as the decision has been largely factored in the market.
