Four local refiners, SK Energy Co Ltd , GS Caltex, S-Oil Corp and Hyundai Oilbank, and KNOC imported a combined 77.2 million barrels last month, compared with 59.1 million barrels a year earlier, according to KNOC data. "Last year's crude import in November was much smaller than an average of 70 million bpd, which made last month's import seem much larger year on year," a Seoul-based oil analyst said. "Margins and local demand for oil products also have increased year on year thanks to recovering economy, helping more demand for crude oil," he said, referring to domestic oil product demand last month, which increased 6.3 percent to 69.1 million barrels. Local crude runs increased by 13.1 percent year on year in November to 76 million barrels, data showed. Total crude processing volumes by South Korean refiners in December would stay unchanged from November at 2.53 million barrels per day on firm demand and healthy margins, a Reuters survey showed earlier this month. [ID:nTOE6B604K] Refinery profit margins were quoted at $0.59 per barrel on average in the past five days and $1.26 on average in the past 15 days, compared with $1.33 in November. Imports of liquefied natural gas by South Korea, the world's No. 2 buyer after Japan, also rose strongly in November, driven by power demand to fuel a rebound in Asia's fourth largest economy, according to the Korea Customs Service last Wednesday.
