Taiwan says no violence during China envoy visit
AP - 37 minutes ago
TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan's president urged those opposed to a top Chinese envoy's visit to keep their protests peaceful, less than two weeks after demonstrators attacked another representative from Beijing.
President Ma Ying-jeou said he understands that many Taiwanese are concerned about the island's security and sovereignty and he will relay those feelings to Chen Yunlin when he arrives Monday. Chen is considered the highest ranking Chinese to visit Taiwan since the two sides split amid civil war in 1949.
"It is not such a bad thing to let Chen Yunlin understand Taiwanese views ... but (any protests) must be legal and peaceful," Ma was quoted as saying by the China Times, a leading Taiwanese daily.
"I will receive Chairman Chen ... and tell him the voice of the Taiwanese public," Ma was quoted as saying. "They have some 1,300 missiles pointing at us."
Aids in the presidential office confirmed Ma's comments.
Chen and his Taiwanese counterpart, Chiang Pin-kung, will hold talks on cementing closer economic ties, especially transport links.
The visit by the head of China's semiofficial Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait is seen as a direct result of Ma's efforts since he took office in May to improve ties and end decades of political rivalry.
But the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party plans to greet Chen with protests and sit-ins, accusing China of using business deals to buy popular support for political unification between the sides.
The party says it biggest protest will come Thursday when Ma is scheduled to meet Chen at a Taipei guest house.
Chen's deputy, Zhang Mingqing, was attacked by protesters during an informal visit to the southern Taiwanese city of Tainan on Oct. 20, injuring him slightly.
On Saturday, a Taiwanese pro-independence group said it would pay protesters to throw eggs at Chen.
"We will offer 1,000 New Taiwan dollars ($30) to protesters who hit Chen's body with eggs, and NT$10,000 ($300) to those who hit Chen's face with eggs," said Michelle Wang, vice chairwoman of the Taiwan Society North.
Ma has repeatedly assured the public that Taiwan's sovereignty will not be compromised.
Political analyst Andrew Yang said Chen's visit marks a watershed for relations and could pave the way for resolving other thorny political issues, such as Taiwan's diplomatic isolation.
"The two sides are building more trust, and things can move forward step by step," he said.
China still claims the self-ruled island a part of its territory and has said that any move toward formal independence would be met with force.
