ADVERTISEMENT The soft-spoken 37-year-old, who caused a sensation in Lars Von Trier's graphic and disturbing thriller about sex, madness and mutilation, said the prize was a "great honour." Gainsbourg said she wanted to share her award with the Danish director, "who has allowed me to live what I believe to be the most intense, the most painful, and most exciting experience of my whole life." And she paid tribute to the Riviera festival "for being brave enough" to select films such as "Antichrist", which sparked walk-outs and faintings in Cannes for excruciating shots including of a clitoris being sliced off. Daughter of the French singer and provocateur Serge Gainsbourg and his British singer-cum-actress wife Jane Birkin, the slender brunette has been a household name in France since she was a teenager. Critics praised her performance in "Antichrist" as a woman transfigured by grief as a turning point in her 25-year career. Gainsbourg plays a woman who retreats with her husband, played by Willem Dafoe, to an isolated log cabin to battle grief and guilt at the death of their baby son, who fell to his death while they made love. But she slides into insanity, turning on her husband and finally on herself in a dramatic escalation of violence that climaxes with a shot of her slicing off her clitoris with a pair of rusty scissors. "She gives all that it is morally possible to ask of an actress, and then some," wrote French newspaper Liberation, displaying a "fierce and destructive force, as opposed to the conventional Charlotte, so gentle and fragile." Half-naked for much of the film, Gainsbourg masturbates lying on the forest floor in one of many explicit scenes, and subjects Dafoe's character to ordeals that include having his genitals smashed with a wooden plank. Critics gasped and jeered during screenings of the gothic thriller, which was one of 20 films competing for the Palme d'Or top handed to Austrian Michael Haneke for "The White Ribbon." Von Trier received an "anti-prize" from an Ecumenical Jury in Cannes which thought it was misogynist, something the director and his actors deny. Gainsbourg has said the film's emotional content, about grief, motherhood, cruelty and madness was tougher to cope with as an actress than the sex and violence factor. "I want to thank my mother, who was my confidante during the shooting, and I'm thinking of father who would have been proud -- proud and shocked I think!" she told the award ceremony. The London-born Gainsbourg caught public attention aged 15 with the provocative song duet "Lemon Incest" -- for which she and her father snuggled up in a king-sized bed to shoot the video. She made her first mark in film two years earlier in "L'Effrontee" and worked for a string of French directors in the 1980s and 1990s, but was often typecast in fragile, androgynous roles. Her big international break came with the 2001 hit comedy, "My Wife Is An Actress", written by her husband and father of her two sons, Yvan Attal, which helped her escape the shadow of her famous parents. Fluent in English, she clinched a part alongside Sean Penn in "21 Grams" by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and played the female lead in "The Science of Sleep" by Oscar-winning French director Michel Gondry. In 2006, Gainsbourg relaunched her early singing career with an electro-pop album co-written with ex-Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker, and has another one in the works with the US singer Beck.
