Seoul, South Korea (AHN) - President Barack Obama and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on Sunday both expressed sadness over the suicide of former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, who has been accused of corruption and whose policy of engagement with the North has been overturned by his successor.
In a statement, Obama said he was "saddened" by Roh's death. He added, During his tenure, President Roh contributed to the strong and vital relationship between the United States and the Republic of Korea. On behalf of government of the United States, I offer my condolences to his family and to the Korean people."
Kim also issued a statement via his state-run Korean Central News Agency saying, "On hearing the news that former President Roh Moo Hyun died in an accident, I express profound condolences to widow Kwon Ryang Suk and his bereaved family." But the North Korean leader followed up his statement with a nuclear test in spite of warnings from the international community.
Roh, 62, jumped off a cliff near his home on Saturday. He left a note saying many people had suffered because of him and his life would only be a burden to others.
About 200,000 people paid tribute to the former leader, who was elected president in 2002, in his home in Bongha Village, according to Yonhap News. His death has also sparked criticisms against the conservative government of President Lee Myung Bak.
