Facility To Catch Greenhouse Gases Get OK To Restart

Melvin Baker - AHN Reporter
Chicago, IL (AHN) - The U.S. Department of Energy on Friday announced it will restart an experimental project to capture and store carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants.
The so-called FutureGen project "holds great promise as a flagship facility to demonstrate carbon capture and storage at commercial scale," said Secretary of Energy Steven Chu.
The Energy Department said it will provide $1.1 billion of the estimated $1.5 billion cost. The rest of the money will be raised by the FutureGen Alliance, a non-profit consortium of coal producers and users.
The facility will be built in Mattoon, IL. It would be the first in the country to collect greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of coal.
The Bush administration withdrew support for the project in 2008 citing concerns about rising costs.
