The company that pioneered software as a service -- managing customers' information and data remotely on a pay-as-you-go basis -- said it could reach 1 million users with its new Mobile Lite service. Yahoo looks outside its walls with new music service SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> is partnering with other online music providers as the Internet giant tries a fresh approach to getting an edge in the evolving digital music business. The new version of Yahoo Music, unveiled on Monday, aggregates paid and free music services available on the Internet, allowing Yahoo users to access and interact with the services directly from the Yahoo site. Page first turned on e-book idea long ago LOS ANGELES - Discovery Communications chairman and founder John Hendricks waited 17 years for the moment when Amazon and Sony would battle for dominance in the world of portable electronic book readers. That's how long ago Hendricks filed for a patent on what he called the Everybook, which now appears to be quite similar to the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader. Now Discovery has sued Amazon, alleging patent infringement. Labels bet flexibility boosts iTunes sales NEW YORK - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and major music labels are betting that the launch of three-tier pricing at the iTunes Music Store will boost music sales with a new mix of song-based packages and give consumers more options. Apple will announce its new three-tier price points at 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29 on Tuesday, according to several people familiar with its plans. Since opening in 2003 all songs in the iTunes store have been priced at 99 cents. New T-Mobile gadgets to sport Google's Android: report - Wireless carrier T-Mobile is planning an aggressive push into the home with a variety of communication devices that will use Google's <GOOG.O> new Android operating software, the New York Times said. According to the paper, confidential documents obtained from a company partner indicate that T-Mobile plans to sell a home phone early next year and a tablet computer soon after, both running Android. Time Warner laying ground for possible AOL spin NEW YORK - Time Warner Inc <TWX.N> said on Monday it is asking some bondholders to change credit terms, a move expected to pave the way for a spin-off of its beleaguered Internet unit AOL. The media conglomerate, whose shares fell 4 percent in early trading, said the change in credit terms will allow for a possible change in ownership at AOL. AP cuts newspaper rates, moves to protect web news NEW YORK - The Associated Press unveiled rate cuts on Monday to help member newspapers reeling from declining advertising revenue and said it would sue websites that use its members' articles without permission. Changes announced by the AP at its annual meeting in San Diego include $35 million in rate assessment reductions for 2010 on top of $30 million it already instituted for 2009. Sun shares drop on failed IBM talks NEW YORK/BOSTON - Shares of Sun Microsystems Inc <JAVA.O> tumbled 23 percent after it rejected a $7 billion buyout bid from IBM <IBM.N>, leaving the smaller server and software maker vulnerable to lawsuits from shareholders nervous about its viability as a stand-alone company. Amid expectation that the collapse of deal talks with IBM could put pressure on Sun Chief Executive Jonathan Schwartz, Sun said in an e-mailed statement on Monday that it would stand by its leadership team and growth strategy. Egypt police detain Muslim Brotherhood blogger CAIRO - Egyptian police have detained a Muslim Brotherhood blogger who backed calls for a national day of protests against the government, security sources said on Sunday. Police arrested Abdel Rahman Fares, 25, in the province of Fayoum, southwest of Cairo, while he was handing out flyers calling for the protests Monday, the security source said. Taiwan researchers say invent cheap quake sensing tool TAIPEI - A research team at Taiwan's top university has rolled out a tiny low-budget device that can sense earthquakes within 30 seconds, enough time to issue crucial disaster warnings, the lead inventor said Monday. The metal tool the size of a tape deck can detect an oncoming quake's speed and acceleration in time to estimate its eventual magnitude and warn trains to slow down or natural gas companies to shut off supplies, said Wu Yih-min, a researcher at the National Taiwan University Department of Geosciences.
