Credit: Reuters/Brendan McDermid By Aman Ali NEW YORK | Mon May 9, 2011 11:18am EDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - Meredith Vieira said on Monday she will leave NBC's Today show in June and will be replaced by the show's news anchor Ann Curry. Vieira has been co-host of NBC's staple morning talk show since 2006 and said during Monday's broadcast that she is leaving to spend more time with her children and husband Richard Cohen, who has multiple sclerosis and colon cancer. "I can't be here every day," she said while fighting back tears. "I really hope to stay with the NBC family. That is my goal." Neither Vieira nor NBC have announced what role she will take with the network once she steps down from Today. Vieira, 57, joined the show in 2006 after co-hosting The View, an all female talk show, on ABC for 9 years. Curry has been a news anchor on the morning show since 1997 and said she was humbled to share a leading role on the show with longtime co-host Matt Lauer. "I feel like the high school computer nerd who was just asked to the prom by the quarterback of the football team," she said. Lauer told Vieira during the broadcast that the show feels "blessed" to have worked with her. "Meredith is universally adored here at Today," he said. "She has brought class, dignity, talent and a joy of life to this show over these last five years. We will miss you like crazy."
