Wreckage of Easter crash hits 3 Atlanta families
By GREG BLUESTEIN,Associated Press Writer AP - Friday, May 8
ATLANTA - Easter Sunday was supposed to be a day to rejoice. It didn't feel that way to Morris Johnson, whose 6-year-old daughter died in a grisly three-car crash, or to Kathy Smith, who lost her daughter, her son-in-law and two grandchildren.

Then there's Aimee Michael, 22, a recent college graduate who has been indicted on vehicular homicide charges. Her mother is charged, too; police say she tried to help her daughter cover up the accident by paying for car repairs.
"It's nothing less than devastating," Johnson, whose wife broke both her legs but survived, told reporters at a news conference. "The loss of my daughter, now trying to see my wife through her injuries and regain health once again."
Police said Michael was on a quick errand to pick up cake and ice cream when her BMW switched lanes on a busy four-lane road in south Atlanta and crashed into the Mercedes carrying Smith's family.
Both cars were forced into oncoming traffic, where Tracie Johnson and her daughter, Morgan, 6, were returning from church in a Volkswagen Beetle that belongs to their pastor. Johnson was driving it as a favor to him.
Police said the BMW drove away from the scene. For almost two weeks, police urged its driver to come forward.
Finally, an anonymous tip led them to Michael, who was indicted on five counts of vehicular homicide in connection with the deadly wreck and could face more than 130 years in prison.
Fulton County Police say she confessed, and a judge reprimanded her last month for not coming forward earlier.
"She, in fact, has watched this be on the news for two weeks and has done absolutely nothing to fulfill her responsibilities," Fulton County Magistrate James Altman said.
Her mother, Sheila Michael, a 52-year-old school teacher, was indicted Wednesday on charges of tampering with evidence and hindering the apprehension of a criminal.
She's accused of helping to pay for car repairs to hide the damage after Aimee Michael broke down and revealed her involvement a few days after the crash, Fulton County Detective Melissa Parker said. Sheila Michael is now on paid leave from her job as a second-grade teacher at an Atlanta elementary school.
Aimee Michael's attorney, W. Scott Smith, did not return repeated calls for comment. He has urged a judge to place her under house arrest rather than keep her in jail, but the request was denied. Renee Rockwell, the attorney for Sheila Michael, also did not return phone calls and e-mails.
Smith said she's grateful the Michaels have been charged, though that doesn't make it easier to cope with the loss of her daughter, Delisia Carter; Delisia's husband, Robert Carter; their newborn son; and Delisia's 9-year-old daughter, Kayla.
Delisia Carter, 38, was a motivational speaker who married Robert Carter last summer. Her friends described her as a free spirit who struggled to right herself after she was briefly homeless following the end of her first marriage.
She seemed on the right path, writing a book about overcoming negativity and hosting a weekly public-access television show. Her life, she said on her Web site, "is a testimony that all things are possible if you believe."
But that kind of hope may be a little harder to come by now for those mourning the five lives lost that day.
"The experience of loss is one thing _ but the loss of four members of the same family who died at the same time is devastating," said Thomas Cuffie, an attorney who represents the relatives of several victims. "The family is rocked. It's been a nightmare."
