Reuters - Thursday, June 18
Palin accepts Letterman apology, protest goes on
ADVERTISEMENT
LOS ANGELES - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin accepted late-night TV host David Letterman's apology over a sexually charged joke about her teenage daughter, but it was not enough to stop a protest outside the comedian's studio on Tuesday. "Of course it's accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve," Palin said in a statement late on Monday night.
Happy Together, again: rocker relives glory daze
LOS ANGELES - They say that if you can remember the '60s, you weren't really there. But Howard Kaylan, the lead singer with the psychedelic pop band the Turtles, found himself in the center of the action, cavorting with the likes of the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix.
Sean Penn giving up Hollywood for family
LOS ANGELES - Sean Penn is taking his Oscar and going home. The "Milk" star has dropped out of two high-profile films: "The Three Stooges" and the crime thriller "Cartel," taking an extended leave from Hollywood so that he can focus on family matters. Sources have said the absence could last up to a year.
Gay activists wary about flamboyant "Bruno"
LOS ANGELES - U.S. gay activists are worried that comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's new film, "Bruno," could reinforce negative stereotypes about homosexuals just as they are making gains in the fight for rights such as same-sex marriage. Cohen, who scored a surprise hit in 2006 with "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," portrays a flamboyant gay Austrian fashion reporter in the new film that premieres on Wednesday in London and opens in the United States on July 10.
Chris Brown attorney seeks delay in assault case
LOS ANGELES - An attorney for R&B singer Chris Brown has asked the California Supreme Court to delay the assault case against the pop star until it can rule on the lawyer's attempt to get information from police. Court records showed on Tuesday that the court has not ruled on the request by attorney Mark Geragos, who is defending the 20-year-old Brown against a charge that in February he beat former girlfriend Rihanna, who is also a pop star.
Jewels missing after Lohan photo shoot
LONDON have gone missing after a London photo shoot involving U.S. actress Lindsay Lohan, her U.S. spokeswoman and British police said Tuesday. British media said the jewels were made by Dior and loaned to Elle magazine for the shoot in north London on June 6.
Bollywood film set in Australia to focus on attacks
MUMBAI - An Indian film-maker plans to make a movie that will put the spotlight on a recent spate of attacks on Indian students in Australia that has caused diplomatic discomfort between the two countries. Mohit Suri said he was inspired to write the script after an Indian friend based in Australia complained of discrimination.
"Trueheart" pumping as movie project
LOS ANGELES - The "Tom Trueheart" children's book trilogy is being adapted as a series of feature films. The adventure fantasy books, by British author Ian Beck, follow a young boy and his older brothers in the Land of Stories.
Black Crowes double down with "Frost" and "Freeze"
NEW YORK - Fans of the Black Crowes will get a double dose of the blues-rock band's music this fall, when the group releases the album "Before the Frost ..." Fans who purchase the September 1 release will receive unique download codes with which they can obtain a second Crowes record, "... Until The Freeze."
Twitter goes literary with Ulysses performance
NEW YORK - Twitter, the social networking site favored by some celebrities, has gone highbrow with a performance from James Joyce's 1922 novel "Ulysses." Two "Ulysses" enthusiasts, videogame designer Ian Bogost from the Georgia Institute of Technology and colleague Ian McCarthy, wanted to use the site in a culturally interesting way rather than just as a service that lets users send 140-character messages, known as tweets.
