Lindsay Lohan back in LA for Monday court showdown
LOS ANGELES - Lindsay Lohan returned to Los Angeles from France on Saturday night, two days after missing a probation hearing that caused a judge to briefly issue a warrant for her arrest. Wearing dark hat and sunglasses, Lohan, 23, flew into Los Angeles and gave the slip to many of the paparazzi who had been stalking around the air terminal all day, according to media reports, after a week of partying at the Cannes film festival.
Tearful James says threw away Sandra Bullock marriage
LOS ANGELES - The soon to be divorced husband of Sandra Bullock says he is probably the "most hated man in the world" for having cheated on the popular actress. A tearful Jesse James, giving his first TV interview since the March split with Bullock, took the blame for the break-up of what had seemed a happy marriage.
British, French films in frame for top Cannes award
CANNES, France - The curtain comes down on the 2010 Cannes film festival on Sunday night with British director Mike Leigh and France's Xavier Beauvois firmly in the frame for the coveted Palme d'Or for best picture. The awards ceremony ends the world's largest cinema showcase where economic uncertainties and the threat of volcanic ash disrupting flights contributed to a relatively low-key, celebrity-light year and capped business on the market.
Losing the shirt? Worth it, says "Idol"s' Casey James
LOS ANGELES - Eliminated "American Idol" contestant Casey James said on Friday he was elated to have ended up in the top three, and acknowledged he might never have got so far had he not famously whipped his shirt off at his first audition. The tall, blue-eyed blond guitarist from Texas wowed "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi when, at her request, he showed off his torso during his first audition in Colorado last summer.
Russian director defends "Burnt by the Sun" sequel
CANNES, France - Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov Saturday defended his new movie "Burned by the Sun 2," which performed poorly at the domestic box office and was criticized by war veterans for historical inaccuracies. His follow-up to the 1994 Oscar-winning drama "Burned by the Sun" resurrects the original characters as, five years later, they face advancing German forces in 1941.
U2's Bono has surgery, tour date postponed
CANNES, France - U2 lead singer Bono had emergency surgery on his back in a Munich hospital on Friday after being injured while preparing for the next leg of a world tour, the first date of which has been postponed. The 50-year-old from Ireland had been getting ready for the North American leg of the "360 Degree" world tour which had been due to kick off in Salt Lake City on June 3, according to a statement first released to Reuters.
Nas and Marley mix rap and reggae inspired by Africa
NEW YORK - Rapper Nas has teamed up with Jamaican reggae artist Damian Marley to release a new studio album and kick off a worldwide tour on Friday that bows to their African ancestry and the roots of reggae and hip hop music. "Distant Relatives," is the New York emcee's first collaboration with any artist for an entire album. It combines some of his trademark tight lyrics and fluid rapping with Marley's Jamaican grooves and simpler phrases, with guest appearances from other top rappers including Lil' Wayne.
"Shrek" gives fairy tale break to backroom artist
LOS ANGELES - Sometimes fairy tales do come true. And where better than Hollywood and "Shrek"? Walt Dohrn, who normally works behind the scenes on the blockbuster movie franchise, has had a magical change in fortune that only the wily Rumpelstiltskin could pull off.
Bieber builds avid Latin American fan base via Web
MIAMI - Earlier this year, before a single Justin Bieber album had been released in Latin America, the teen star from Ontario, Canada, was already an Internet sensation south of the border. "I remember getting a call from Island Def Jam saying Brazil was the No. 2 country after the U.S. with YouTube hits for Justin Bieber," says Gabriela Carrilho, vice president of international marketing for Universal Music Latin America.
Iran filmmakers want hunger striker colleague freed
TEHRAN - Iranian filmmakers called in an open letter for the release of internationally known director Jafar Panahi who is on hunger strike in a Tehran prison, the semi-official news agency ILNA said on Saturday.
