Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - There was optimism churned out by Toronto Mayor David Miller on Friday and not a hint of Molotov-cocktail-throwing demonstrators, water cannons, helmeted riot police and a complete security lockdown that have accompanied recent multinational summits around the world.
Miller was showcasing Toronto as a booming tourist destination for Americans, beyond the upcoming G20 summit during the weekend of June 26-27, saying, “People are welcome that weekend, but they'll probably be staying out of Toronto ... Obviously, the hotels are booked that weekend," adding, “But Toronto is fantastic in the summer.”
The Toronto mayor along with local officials and celebrities flown in for the purpose addressed journalists at the National Press Club, with hope of boosting his city from the international attention the G20 Summit is set to bring in June.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta of “Water” fame and Roots co-founder Michael Budman added charm and color to the occasion. Mehta shared her personal vetting of the diverse and vibrant multicultural and multiethnic community of the city, declaring that after New Delhi, her heart rests in Toronto.
Budman said factors in favor of his decision to move from the U.S. were the charm and diversity of the city.
Miller faced a barrage of questions about security preparations, including one linking the the threat issued against the G8 and G20 summits by an anarchist group that claimed responsibility for firebombing a Royal Bank branch in Ottawa.
"The combined police services have been working very closely for months to develop intelligence to determine if there are any disrupters. They are not welcome in Toronto," Miller said.
“Obviously people take what happened in Ottawa seriously, and we believe our preparations are as strong and robust as they can possibly be anywhere in the world,” he added.
A group calling itself FFFC-Ottawa claimed responsibility for the May 18 bank bombing and said "we will be there" when Canada hosts the G8 and G20 summits.
Police will be releasing details about the size of the planned security cordon in downtown Toronto within the next 10 days, Miller told journalists when pressed for more details about the security arrangements.
It will include a "higher security" inner perimeter for world leaders and another outer perimeter with somewhat lower security, he said.
Miller called Toronto “an exceptionally safe city," disclosing that "I've got my subway pass in my pocket somewhere here. I walk the streets.”
Tourism Toronto president David Whitaker had less patience with journalists and tried to get them back to see to the subject of Toronto "celebrating."
"There's a tug of war between the story being the protests, of the story being the agenda of the G20 or the story being the story of the host community celebrating what we are very very proud of," he stressed to journalists.
"It's a real tug of war for hearts and minds and you are helping shape that story. I encourage you professionally and respectfully to have a balanced approach to that story," he said.
