MILAN, Italy (AFP) - – Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi left hospital on Thursday four days after an assault which the flamboyant leader said he hoped would lessen animosity in Italy's polarised politics. "If, after what happened, there is a better awareness of the need for calmer and more honest language in Italian politics, this pain will not have been for naught," said the billionaire prime minister, who suffered severe facial wounds in the assault on Sunday. With a bandage on his face, the 73-year-old Italian leader left hospital in a black sedan, waving to reporters crowded at the gates. Berlusconi, who was struck in the face by a souvenir model of Milan cathedral, spent three hours with his dentist, who repaired two broken teeth, before proceeding to his villa near Milan, media reports said. A Swiss newspaper said Berlusconi may receive follow-up treatment at a Swiss clinic, though his personal doctor Alberto Zangrillo said plastic surgery was not needed. Berlusconi reportedly has previously had his eyelids touched up at the clinic. The prime minister's appeal for dialogue drew a caustic reaction from anti-corruption politician Antonio Di Pietro, who said, "When the Berlusconi government asks for dialogue, the first thing to wonder is, what's the catch?" Di Pietro, who heads the small Italy of Values party, added: "As far as we're concerned, there needs to be a national liberation committee against those who deny the role of parliament, the Constitutional Court and the president." Passions have run high since the attack, in parliament, in the street and on the Internet, with the left and right accusing each other of creating a "climate of hatred" that provoked the assault. But on Thursday the flamboyant leader said his days in hospital left him feeling "loved" by the Italian people. "I will have two memories from these days: the hatred of few and the love of many, so many Italians," he said. "Neither the violence of stones nor the worse violence of words... will prevail" in Italy. "I have felt that even some political opposition leaders have come closer," he declared. The assault caps a rocky year for Berlusconi, who began his third stint as prime minister in May 2008. The head of a vast media empire, he has targeted prosecutors seeking his conviction on corruption charges, as well the Constitutional Court, which threw out an immunity law that protected him from prosecution while in office. After the court ruling Berlusconi publicly questioned President Giorgio Napolitano's impartiality over the issue. Last week Berlusconi dismissed accusations of Mafia ties made by a turncoat criminal at an Italian court. Earlier this year, allegations about dalliances with a young women led his wife Veronica Lario to file for divorce. She is reportedly seeking a settlement of 43 million euros (65 million dollars) a year. Following his release from hospital, Italian media said the prime minister would spend two weeks recovering at his villa in nearby Arcore, as doctors ordered. Berlusconi called off a trip to the Copenhagen climate summit this week and a Christmas Eve trip to L'Aquila, the city where nearly 300 died in an earthquake in April. Berlusconi's assailant Massimo Tartaglia, 42, was described by police as having a history of mental problems. Tartaglia, who could face up to five years in jail if convicted of assault, remains in custody despite a lawyer's request for his transfer to a psychiatric hospital. A judge said that Tartaglia was still capable of carrying out a similar act, ANSA reported.
