U2 reschedules N.America tour
LONDON - Irish rock band U2 have rescheduled the dates for the North American leg of their 360 tour for Spring/Summer 2011 with all tickets valid for the new performance dates, their concert promoter said Tuesday. The North American leg will kick off on May 21 next year at Invesco Field in Denver and end on July 23, 2011 in Minneapolis, music concert company Live Nation Entertainment said. The 2010 European tour will begin on time on August 6, 2010 in Turin.
Polanski victim says satisfied with Swiss release
PARIS - The woman with whom film director Roman Polanski was convicted of having illegal sex when she was a minor said on Tuesday she was satisfied with Switzerland's decision not to extradite him to the United States for the 1977 offence. Samantha Geimer, now a mother of three in her 40s, has repeatedly asked for the case to be dropped. Switzerland on Monday refused to hand him over and freed him after months of house arrest.
Court strikes down FCC indecency policy
NEW YORK - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission's indecency policy is unconstitutionally vague and could create a chilling effect beyond "fleeting expletives" heard on broadcasts, an appeals court ruled on Tuesday in a major win for broadcasting companies. The ruling, by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit in New York, arose from a case involving Bono, frontman of the rock group U2, who used an expletive when he received an award during the live broadcast of the 2003 Golden Globe Awards.
"Glee" writers drop hints about season No. 2
LOS ANGELES - In the second season of "Glee", high school students Rachel and Finn will stay together, guest star Kristin Chenoweth will "definitely" be back, and actor Javier Bardem will make an appearance. Ryan Murphy, the creator of the Emmy-nominated TV musical comedy, and fellow writers Ian Brennan and Brad Fulchuk also say there will be just five musical numbers per episode and more emphasis on the show's colorful characters.
Mel Gibson will work in this town again
LOS ANGELES - The death of Mel Gibson's career has been greatly exaggerated. Sure, a fresh wave of obituaries was to be expected in the wake of a string of contretemps that jolted even the most jaded observers of our scandal-saturated mediasphere.
World Cup finale draws 700 million viewers
COLOGNE, Germany - Spanish broadcasters said Ole! to record ratings as nearly 17 million fans watched the country's one-nil victory over the Netherlands in the finals of football's World Cup, part of about 700 million viewers estimated to have caught the match on small screens worldwide. Some 16.8 million Spaniards -- 91 percent of the TV audience -- caught the highlight of the match, when Andres Iniesta rocketed in the winning goal in extra time giving Spain its first-ever World Cup win. On average 15.6 million people in Spain, 86 percent of the audience, watched on the three channels broadcasting the match, an all-time average record, according to ratings agency Barlovento Comunicacion.
"High School" star Zac Efron graduates to producer
LOS ANGELES - Former "High School Musical" star Zac Efron, who successfully moved into adult fare last year with "17 Again," is quietly establishing his credentials as a Hollywood producer. His Warner Bros.-based banner -- Ninjas Runnin' Wild Prods. -- is aggressively seeking vehicles and opportunities for the 22-year-old actor, rather than waiting for the studios to come calling.
Family flicks firing up summer box office
LOS ANGELES - Films aimed at parents of youngsters have been so hot this summer that even executives marketing R-rated horror movies must be tempted to work a couple of bars of "We Are Family" into promo spots. Family films have well outpaced prerelease projections repeatedly since May, and Disney hopes to extend that streak when "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" hits multiplexes Wednesday. Consensus forecasts show the Nicolas Cage family fantasy ringing up more than $30 million during its five-day bow.
"Die Hard" director McTiernan guilty of lying to court
LOS ANGELES - "Die Hard" film director John McTiernan on Monday pleaded guilty to lying to law enforcement officials in connection with the racketeering case of a private detective who represented many Hollywood stars. A trial for McTiernan had been expected to begin on Tuesday in Los Angeles on two counts of making false statements to federal agents and one count of perjury.
Labels try to catch porn industry with pants down
LOS ANGELES - The struggling music industry may be aroused at the prospect of winning money from the porn industry. Warner Bros. and a number of other record labels filed a lawsuit last week alleging copyright infringement on the part of an adult entertainment company whose porn videos allegedly featured such spectacles as actors lip-synching to Justin Timberlake's "Sexyback" while engaging in sexual acts on camera.
