Palestinian negotiator met Iranian FM: top official
AFP - Monday, July 20
RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) - - Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat met with Iran's foreign minister in Egypt three days ago in the first such encounter, a senior Palestinian official told AFP on Sunday.

"Saeb Erakat met with Manouchehr Mottaki in Sharm el-Sheikh three days ago," the official said on condition of anonymity.
It marked the first such meeting since the Palestinian Authority was established in 1994, he added.
"They discussed the internal Palestinians situation and the need for successful negotiations between Hamas and Fatah," he said, referring to the two main Palestinian factions.
The two men also discussed "the need for a balance between Fatah and Hamas, the need for support of dialogue (between the two groups)... regional conditions and how to strike a balance in support between Hamas and Fatah," he added.
The official was referring to Egyptian-mediated reconciliation talks between Western-backed Fatah and Iranian-backed Hamas, the seventh round of which was on Sunday postponed by a month to August 25.
Simmering tensions between the two rivals erupted into deadly street battles two years ago and ended with Hamas seizing control of the Gaza Strip.
The move split the Palestinians into two entities, with president Mahmud Abbas finding his authority restricted to the Israeli-occupied West Bank while Hamas controlled the Gaza Strip.
Iran is an enthusiastic supporter of Hamas and in March Abbas told Tehran to stop "interfering" in Palestinian affairs after the Islamic Republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called for the world's Muslims to join the Palestinian "resistance."
"We are sending a message to the Iranians and others -- stop interfering in our affairs," Abbas told reporters after talks with visiting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on March 4. "They are interfering only to deepen the rift between Palestinians."
On the same day, Khamenei made his call at the start of a two-day summit in support of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
"The only way to save Palestine is resistance," Khamenei said in his address to open the global summit Tehran organised in aid of Gaza and the Palestinians.
"Support and help to Palestinians is a mandatory duty of all Muslims. I now tell all Muslim brothers and sisters to join forces and break the immunity of the Zionist criminals," Khamenei said.
