Queen Sirikit was taken to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital late Thursday, an official at the facility said, asking not to be named. "She has been admitted to Chulalongkorn Hospital since 11:00 pm (1600 GMT) last night," the person said. The queen's condition was unclear. There was no comment from the Royal Household Bureau. King Bhumibol, who is the world's longest-reigning monarch and considered a demi-god by many Thais, was seen arriving at the hospital Friday evening in a wheelchair with royal aides, as hospital staff knelt and bowed in respect. The king was admitted to Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital in September 2009 for treatment of a respiratory condition, although he has appeared in public several times since. He married Queen Sirikit, a distant cousin and ambassador's daughter, in 1950, the same year as his coronation. The only monarch that the vast majority of Thais have ever known, the king continues to command immense affection and respect among his subjects. The king has no official political role but is seen as a unifying figure in a country that is frequently riven by political unrest, including mass opposition protests this year that turned deadly. He remained largely silent during the recent political crisis, which triggered a series of street clashes between armed troops and anti-government "Red Shirt" protesters that left 91 people dead in April and May.
