Microsoft "Halo: Reach" sales hit $200 million on 1st day
TOKYO - Microsoft <MSFT.O> said its new videogame "Halo: Reach" had racked up $200 million in global sales on its launch day, building strong momentum for the November debut of the Xbox 360 maker's new gaming system. "Halo: Reach," the latest in the blockbuster "Halo" series, is a key title for Microsoft heading into the holiday shopping season when it and archrivals Nintendo <7974.OS> and Sony Corp <6758.T> clash with new products and look to reverse a recent sales slump in the $60 billion game industry.
Intel guru: future phones will sense your mood
SAN FRANCISCO - Ultra-smartphones that react to your moods and televisions that can tell it's you who's watching are in your future as Intel Corp's <INTC.O> top technology guru sets his sights on context-aware computing. Chief technology officer Justin Rattner stuffed sensors down his socks at the annual Intel Develop Forum in San Francisco on Wednesday to demonstrate how personal devices will one day offer advice that goes way beyond local restaurants and new songs to download.
Microsoft releases newest version of Web browser
SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> released the latest version of its Web browser, saying that it would work at faster speeds, deliver better graphics and be less obtrusive to users. Internet Explorer 9, unlike previous versions and many competing browsers, pushes itself into the background.
E-textbooks expected to grow with iPad on campus
LOS ANGELES - Video and color graphics are key to why many people think Apple Inc's iPad and other tablets will usher in the era of electronic textbooks. Analysts say that unlike Amazon.com Inc's Kindle -- briefly touted as an educational tool -- the iPad can play video and illustrate charts and graphics in full color. It also allows for easy note-taking and the online component allows for integrated tests, exercises and updates.
Google hit with new privacy problem, fires engineer
WASHINGTON - Internet search and advertising giant Google Inc <GOOG.O> fired an engineer in July for violating users' privacy, the company said on Wednesday. The engineer, David Barksdale, was accused of accessing information about teenagers he had met in a Washington state technology group, according to gossip website Gawker, which first reported the incident on Tuesday. Google would not confirm details of the firing.
EMusic nears major label deals for fall relaunch
NEW YORK - eMusic, the subscription digital music service, is close to wrapping up deals with the last two major labels in time for a planned relaunch in November, its chief executive said on Tuesday in an interview. The 12-year old start-up is working on deals with Vivendi's Universal Music Group and EMI Group in the coming weeks, a move that would expand its library of music to about 17 million songs -- up from 10 million now.
HTC unveils new smartphones, pushes into services
LONDON - Smartphone maker HTC Corp <2498.TW> unveiled details on Wednesday of its push into the increasingly important mobile services sector and introduced two new handsets using Google's <GOOG.O> Android operating software. The launch came a day after Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, the world's biggest cellphone maker, launched three new smartphones at its annual showcase conference in London.
Facebook gets movie treatments as social media at high
LOS ANGELES - Facebook hits the silver screen this fall with two movies coming out within weeks of each other at a time when social media is at an all-time high. Independent documentary "Catfish" and glitzy Hollywood feature "The Social Network" couldn't be more different. But both could very well be two sides of the same coin.
Author Shteyngart sees fall of digital-gripped U.S.
NEW YORK - Russian-American author Gary Shteyngart's new book is a vision of a fast-declining America, obsessed by youthfulness, gripped by omniscient smartphones and swayed by monopolies and the Bank of China. A cash-strapped United States is at war with Venezuela and the Chinese yuan-pegged dollars are coveted currency.
