IL, United States (AHN) - The Illinois State Police will continue its search for the body of the fourth wife of former Bolingbrook police sergeant Drew Peterson, who goes on trial next month for allegedly murdering his third wife.
Investigators began digging in a private farm near Peoria over the weekend to pursue a tip about where the body of Drew's fourth wife, Stacy, may be buried. They suspended the search on Sunday but will resume operations later this week.
Stacy Peterson was last seen dressed in a red jogging suit on the morning of Oct. 28, 2007, when she home to go to a friend's house to paint. Her husband has not been charged but investigators have classified her case as a potential homicide.
Drew Peterson is the sole suspect in the disappearance of Stacy. He is being held at the Will County Jail on a $20 million bond and has pleaded not guilty to murdering his fourth wife, Kathleen Savio.
The 56-year-old former police seargeant has maintained that Stacy ran away to be with a different man while investigators have pursued tips, including searching a Lockport cana for any clues to his missing fourth wife.
The death of Peterson's third wife, Savio, first ruled an accident but the disappearance Stacy prompted investigators to re-open her case.
Savio was found dead in her bathtub on March 1, 2004. Her body was exhumed in November 2007 by a special grand jury also probing the disappearance of Stacy. Prosecutors believe Peterson drowned Savio the day before her body was found.
Peterson was indicted on two counts of first degree murder last year in the death of Savio, the mother of two of his six children. His trial begins with jury selection on July 8.
