Yahoo to help marketers target ads: report
ADVERTISEMENT
- Yahoo <YHOO.O> is set to unveil several tools on Tuesday to help marketers better target their online adverts, as the Internet company tries to win back business during a recession, the Wall Street Journal said, citing senior company officials. Yahoo, the leading provider of online display advertising, has been under pressure for nearly a year as it held fruitless merger or partnership talks with Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>, Google Inc <GOOG.O> and Time Warner Inc's <TWX.N> AOL.
Vudu offering HD films for download to own
LOS ANGELES - Vudu has become the first on-demand service to offer high-definition movies for download to own rather than just rent. Under agreements with such independent film companies as Magnolia Pictures, FirstLook Studios and Kino, Vudu will begin by offering 50 HD titles, including best documentary Oscar winner "Man on Wire," for purchase.
Microsoft drops payback demand on ex-workers
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> has dropped an attempt to recoup some severance money from 25 recently fired workers it mistakenly overpaid. The Redmond, Washington-based company, which announced a plan to cut up to 5,000 jobs in January, acknowledged on Sunday that it had tried to get the overpaid workers to return the extra money. But late on Monday, it reversed course.
Britons prefer Amazon for digital media
HELSINKI - Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> has established a clear lead in user preference for digital media download sites in Britain, despite a relatively late entry into the market, a survey published by Strategy Analytics said. Amazon was the most preferred brand across music, video and games downloads preferences, ahead of Apple's iTunes <AAPL.O>, Microsoft's MSN <MSFT.O> and eBay <EBAY.O>.
Yahoo news exec departs amid reorganization rumors
SAN FRANCISCO - The head of Yahoo Inc's <YHOO.O> news and information division has jumped ship to Hearst Corp, as speculation mounts that the Internet company is on the brink of a major management reorganization. Hearst said on Monday that Neeraj Khemlani will join the newspaper and magazine publisher in March as vice president and special assistant to the chief executive for digital media.
Vodafone to cut hundreds of jobs
LONDON - Vodafone <VOD.L>, the world's largest mobile phone group by revenue, is to cut hundreds of jobs in Britain, according to a report on Sky News. The move to cut jobs could be made as early as Tuesday, said the report.
LG Electronics asks for patent suit against Kodak
WASHINGTON - LG Electronics <066570.KS> has asked a trade panel to investigate possible digital camera patent infringement by Eastman Kodak <EK.N>, the International Trade Commission announced. LG Electronics made the request on Friday.
California's video game law ruled unconstitutional
LOS ANGELES - A U.S. appeals court ruled Friday that a California law restricting the sales and rental of violent video games to minors and imposing labeling requirements is too restrictive and violates free speech guarantees. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the labeling requirement unfairly forces video games to carry "the state's controversial opinion" about which games are violent.
Apple's Woz waltzes back into the spotlight
SAN FRANCISCO - Tech icon Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple and helped popularize personal computing, is obviously unafraid to try new things. His latest venture is competing in "Dancing with the Stars," ABC's reality TV show which returns for an eighth season on March 9.
Digital music services flunk college test
DENVER - College campuses were once a prime spawning ground for new digital music services. Those days appear to be over.
