Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Weekend Edition US-TECH Summary Reuters - 31 minutes ago Send IM Story Print Wall Street ponders Apple without Steve Jobs BOSTON/LOS ANGELES - Is Steve Jobs really worth just $6 billion? Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> revelation that its visionary CEO is taking his third medical leave of absence, this time for an indefinite period, sent shares in the world's most prominent tech company barely 2 percent south, or roughly the same amount higher or lower on any other day. Two charged over iPad hacking on AT&T network NEW YORK - U.S. prosecutors have charged two men with stealing and distributing email addresses for about 120,000 users of Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> popular iPad. Investigators accused Daniel Spitler and Andrew Auernheimer of using an "account slurper" to conduct a "brute force" attack over five days last June, to extract data about iPad users who accessed the Internet through AT&T Inc's <T.N> 3G network. Jobs' health overshadows quarterly Apple sales SAN FRANCISCO - The health of Apple Inc <AAPL.O> Chief Executive Steve Jobs will overshadow quarterly results on Tuesday from the consumer electronics powerhouse, whose iPhone and iPad excited holiday shoppers. Apple shares, up 62 percent in the last 12 months, were down 3.4 percent in midday trade on Tuesday. That is far less than the estimated 11 percent drop in Apple shares after Jobs announced his last medical leave. Sprint ups fees for smartphone users by $10 NEW YORK - Sprint Nextel Corp <S.N> plans to increase monthly service fees by $10 a month for smartphone customers, edging its prices closer to those of bigger rivals Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc <T.N>. Starting January 30, Sprint will increase its price for smartphone users, which use roughly 10 times more data services than typical customers, instead of limiting data usage such as its bigger rival AT&T has done. After the change, Sprint's cheapest monthly service will be $79.99 for smartphone customers. Goldman to exclude U.S. from Facebook placement NEW YORK - Goldman Sachs <GS.N> said it will limit its private placement of shares of social networking site Facebook to investors outside the United States, citing "intense media coverage." Goldman expects to raise $1.5 billion for Facebook, the wildly popular site used as a message board and for online social networking. Firms to buy 10 million tablets in 2011: Deloitte HELSINKI - Companies will buy more than 10 million tablet computers this year, consultancy Deloitte said on Tuesday supporting recent research from Gartner which sees the global market for Apple's <AAPL.O> iPad, rising to 55 million devices this year from 19.5 million in 2010. "Although some commentators view tablets as underpowered media-consumption toys suitable only for consumers... in 2011, more than 25 percent of all tablet computers will be bought by enterprises and that figure is likely to rise in 2012 and beyond," Deloitte said in its annual sector forecast. American Airlines, Priceline in distribution deal CHICAGO - American Airlines <AMR.N>, which is battling third-party ticket sellers over distribution costs and methods, on Tuesday said it has reached a deal with Priceline.com <PCLN.O> to use American's direct connect technology to access fares. American, a unit of AMR Corp, said Priceline will begin issuing its tickets through the link in the near future. The companies did not disclose terms of the deal. Venezuela, Cuba outfox U.S. with fiber optic cable HAVANA - Venezuela will connect Cuba to a high-speed fiber optic cable next month undermining U.S. sanctions prohibiting Cuba's access to nearby underwater lines, the head of the project said on Tuesday. A French ship will begin laying the 995-mile submarine cable on Saturday and it is expected to reach eastern Cuba by February 8, Wilfredo Morales, president of Telecomunicaciones Gran Caribe, the Venezuelan-Cuban joint venture that owns the line, said. Facebook new frontier in parent-teen relationship NEW YORK - Roughly two thirds of American teenagers are comfortable enough with their parents to have them as Facebook friends, according to a new study. But 16 percent of students said befriending their parents was a precondition for joining the social networking site and 38 percent said they simply ignored friend requests from their father or mother. Clearwire names John Stanton as chairman NEW YORK - Clearwire Corp's <CLWR.O> board elected John Stanton as Chairman replacing founder Craig McCaw who resigned from the wireless service provider's board December 31. Stanton, a wireless industry veteran, has been on Clearwire's board since November 2008 and is also a managing director of Trilogy Partners, a part owner of Clearwire.
