Israel declares parts of Hebron closed military area
AFP - Wednesday, December 3
HEBRON, West Bank, (AFP) - - Israel has declared parts of the West Bank city of Hebron a closed military area, in what media on Wednesday said foreshadowed a forceful removal of settlers who have defied an eviction order and staged violent protests.
The order affects the immediate vicinity of the house in which about 100 Jewish settlers have lived since 2007, but which the Israeli High Court ordered evacuated on November 16.
"The sector around the house has been decreed a closed military zone," a military spokesman said, adding that Israelis are barred from entering the Palestinian areas of the city.
The Haaretz daily suggested the order was part of preparations for a forceful eviction, which it said could be carried out by the end of the week.
The order was issued after a night and a day of violence in the flashpoint city, in which 20 Palestinians and 18 Israelis were injured, according to media.
The settlers, backed by other far-right wing Israelis, hurled rocks at Palestinians and security forces, torched cars, slashed the tyres of police jeeps and desecrated graves at a Muslim cemetery.
