SAN FRANCISCO - Before deciding where to buy a laptop for his daughter on Black Friday, Nate Bryan was scouring the web for deals. But he was not just looking at retailers' websites. "I use Twitter and Facebook a lot for Black Friday," he said, referring to the day after Thanksgiving when retailers open their doors early and offer eye-popping deals. "People interested in computers post what they see online."
Exec says Nokia must speed up transformation: report
FRANKFURT - Nokia <NOK1V.HE> needs to speedily boost its offering of mobile internet solutions, marketing head Anssi Vanjoki told a German magazine and did not rule out a sale of its core handset manufacturing business in the long term. Nokia, the No. 1 global cellphone maker, needs to catch up with the rivals Apple <AAPL.O>, Google <GOOG.O> and Blackberry-maker RIM <RIM.TO> in offering online solutions, Vanjoki was quoted as saying by weekly Wirtschaftswoche in an excerpt of an interview to be published on Monday.
Activision says "Call of Duty" series tops $3 billion
SAN FRANCISCO - Activision Blizzard Inc <ATVI.O> said on Friday its "Call of Duty" video game franchise pushed past the $3 billion mark in global retail sales. Overall, the "Call of Duty" series has sold more than 55 million units since its launch in 2003, Activision said, citing data compiled by NPD Group, Charttrack, GfK and internal company estimates.
Videogames find ways to help real CSI solve crimes
RALEIGH, North Carolina - In hit TV crime drama show "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation," and its two spin-offs, the criminologists use the latest technology to solve grisly murders and other crimes. Soon, real criminal investigation teams will be using videogame technology to help forensic scientists collaborate virtually to re-create what happened at the scene of the crime.
French minister wants Europe to take on Google
PARIS - European Union members want to create a joint project on the digitization of books, French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand said, challenging Google's plan to create a massive digital library. EU ministers agreed in Brussels on Friday to create a committee of "wise men" to carve out a plan, Mitterrand said in an interview with French newspaper Journal du Dimanche due to be published on Saturday.
Acer says Windows 7 good for sales
TOKYO - Taiwan's Acer Inc <2353.TW>, the world's No.2 PC maker, said Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> Windows 7 operating system launch last month has been positive for year-end PC sales, though the gains were within expectations. Acer's CEO said it was keeping its quarterly revenue outlook and maintaining a 15 percent sales growth target for next year.
Iraq to counter "lies", show successes via YouTube
BAGHDAD - Iraq's government launched its first channel on Google Inc's <GOOG.O> video website YouTube on Wednesday, which the prime minister said would allow the country to counter media "lies" and showcase its successes. Nuri al-Maliki, whose Shi'ite Muslim-led government is seeking re-election in national polls in early 2010, said the YouTube channel would help dispel the "lies and misleading information in the news" which did not reflect Iraq's progress.
Second Sony Ericsson phone has software problem
STOCKHOLM - A second of Sony Ericsson's <ERICb.ST> <6758.T> new smartphones, key to its strategy for returning to profit next year, has been hit by software problems in Britain ahead of a critical sales period. A spokesman for the world's fourth-largest mobile phone maker said a number of users of the new Aino smartphone, part of the company's Christmas line-up, had experienced problems using the touch screen.
LinkedIn co-founder sees IPO likely, but not soon
LONDON - LinkedIn, the world's biggest professional social network, will probably pursue an initial public offering some time but not in the near future, co-founder and executive chairman Reid Hoffman told Reuters. "Probably at some point a balance will occur when that's the right thing. That will not occur in the near term," Hoffman said at a London event to celebrate the network's reaching 3 million users in Britain.
Mobile Web surge continues in October: Opera
HELSINKI - Global mobile data traffic continued to surge in October, growing at the fastest pace in seven months, Internet browser company Opera Software <OPERA.OL> said on Wednesday. Data traffic through Opera's mobile browser -- which packages up to 90 percent of the data to save network bandwidth -- rose 16 percent in October from September, the company said.
