Nokia to cut 1,800 jobs after strong third quarter
HELSINKI - Nokia reported stronger-than-expected profits for the third quarter, boosted by solid demand for its cheap smartphones, and said on Thursday it would cut up to 1,800 jobs. Third-quarter underlying earnings per share for the world's largest handset maker dropped to 0.14 euros from 0.18 euros a year ago, but beat all forecasts -- which ranged between 0.08 to 0.12 euro -- in a Reuters poll of 36 analysts.
Dell plans ad makeover to shed low-price image
NEW YORK - Dell Inc <DELL.O> is getting a marketing makeover, trying to shed its image as a cheaper alternative to rivals, including the sleek and highly popular gadgets sold by Apple Inc <AAPL.O>. The world's No. 2 PC maker said on Wednesday it will spend "hundreds and hundreds of millions" on an advertising campaign for its consumer business, to coincide with the launch of new products, including laptops with JBL speakers.
Netflix may offer U.S. Web service this year
LOS ANGELES - Netflix Inc, which rose to success with its by-mail DVD rental service, may add a streaming-only service in the United States this year, as it expands its reach in the digital market. The company also reported on Wednesday another quarter of strong subscriber growth, and its shares rose in after-hours trading.
Apple shows off iPad-inspired Mac laptop
CUPERTINO, California - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the thinnest, lightest Mac laptop yet, fusing features from its popular iPhone and iPad with its traditional line of personal computers. Apple, whose computers have taken market share from PCs based on Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> Windows, will bring a version of its mobile applications store to the Mac, aiming to replicate its success and spur development of new programs.
Sony expects TV price falls in U.S. by year-end
TOKYO - Television prices are likely to fall in the U.S. market ahead of the year-end, the head of Sony Corp's loss-making TV division said on Thursday. His comments came hours after LG Display, the world's No. 2 LCD flat screen maker, reported its worst operating profit in six quarters on sliding prices for panels.
Google says few Germans opted out of Street View
FRANKFURT - Only a small percentage of Germans have so far opted out of Google <GOOG.O> Street View after the U.S. company doubled the period in which people could request to have their homes or apartments blurred. "We are about to launch Street View images in 20 large German cities," Andreas Tuerk, Street View product manager in Germany said in a blog post on Thursday.
Pentagon seeks tight ties with cyber contractors
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Defense Department aims to tighten ties with its cybersecurity contractors in an effort to better protect sensitive computer networks against growing cyber threats. The department's use of top-level system integrators and entrepreneurs will continue to grow, along with the need for so-called "active" defenses that scan incoming code to shield network perimeters, Robert Butler, the Pentagon's top official for cyber policy, said on Wednesday.
Electronic Arts to buy mobile game publisher
NEW YORK - Electronic Arts <ERTS.O> said it plans to buy the publisher of "Angry Birds," one of the most popular games on Apple's iPhone, pushing the second largest U.S. video game publisher deeper into the hot mobile games market. A source close to the deal told Reuters EA will pay under $20 million in cash plus other undisclosed considerations.
Verizon prices Samsung Tab just under iPad
NEW YORK - Verizon Wireless, the No. 1 U.S. mobile service, plans to sell Samsung Electronics's <005930.KS> Galaxy Tab for $30 less than Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad, but analysts say the new tablet computer is priced too high. Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications <VZ.N> and Vodafone Group Plc <VOD.L>, said on Wednesday that it will sell the Tab for $599.99 on November 11. It will also charge a $20 fee per gigabyte of data downloaded.
Telecom Italia to offer high-speed mobile service
MILAN - Telecom Italia <TLIT.MI> unveiled on Wednesday a new service as part of plans to upgrade its mobile network, amid calls by Italy's telecom regulator for more investment and rival plans to boost mobile broadband coverage. Telecom Italia, Italy's largest telecom operator, said its new service would allow users in Milan and Rome to enjoy speeds of up to 21 Megabits per second over a wireless network, up from a maximum of 14.4 Mbit/second now.
