The six villagers who US Congressmen alleged were tortured after a dispute over a cemetery, were convicted at a one-day trial in the central Vietnamese city of Danang, relatives said. In a case which sparked concern from the United States embassy, the villagers were arrested after a clash in May between residents and a large group of police in Con Dau Catholic parish, near the central city of Danang, said residents. The incident occurred when they tried to bury an 82-year-old woman, they said. Four of the accused received nine-month suspended jail terms but two others were sent to jail, respectively for terms of nine months and one year, the family members said. On Tuesday three US Congressmen asked top Vietnamese leaders to intervene in the trial and consider granting unconditional and immediate release for the six. Their US-based relatives testified about the incident before a congressional panel. In their letters, Congressmen Christopher Smith, Anh "Joseph" Cao and Frank Wolf say one villager died after repeated beatings by police and two women reported miscarriages. The Congressmen said they believed reports were credible that the Con Dau villagers had been tortured and physically abused by police and security agents. A US embassy spokesman said the embassy was continuing to monitor the situation and had "expressed concern over use of force during the Con Dau incident and over reports of harsh treatment of detainees." The embassy has urged "all sides" to exercise restraint, the spokesman said. Vietnam has denied any injuries occurred in what it termed a land dispute which has nothing to do with religion. It described accounts of mistreatment and detentions as an attempt to "smear Vietnam". There has been a long-running series of church-state land disputes in Vietnam but a foreign diplomat said earlier that this case was different because the cemetery was not owned by the church itself. In another case, the trio of labour activists were jailed for between seven and nine years after their conviction on a charge of disrupting security, a court official in southern Vietnam said. They instigated several strikes in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province between last December and February, Nguoi Lao Dong (Labourers) newspaper said. They were also charged with distributing "reactionary" leaflets in the two areas, the paper added. Vietnam bans independent labour organisations, while trade unions are under strict government control. Amnesty International condemned the sentences and said authorities must "stop this needless crackdown on government critics and peaceful activists." US-based Human Rights Watch called for Secretary of State Clinton to speak out against an "intensifying campaign of harassment, arrest, beatings in custody, unfair trials, and long prison terms" against peaceful bloggers, community activists and others in Vietnam during her visit. She is to arrive in Hanoi on Friday for talks with her Vietnamese counterpart and regional leaders attending the East Asia Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and regional partners. After meeting Vietnam's Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem in July, Clinton expressed concern "about arrest and conviction of people of peaceful dissent, attacks on religious groups and curbs on Internet freedom." Human Rights Watch urged Clinton to follow up on those remarks. Despite human rights concerns and war memories, the United States and Vietnam have been steadily expanding cooperation -- which many analysts see as a mutual response to growing concerns about regional heavyweight China.
