Google starts One Pass digital subscription service
SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK - Google Inc <GOOG.O> launched a service to make it easy for publishers to sell digital versions of newspapers and magazines, undercutting a similar plan launched by Apple Inc <AAPL.O>, as both tech titans battle to dominate smartphones and tablet computers. Google announced in a blog post on Wednesday its plan to woo newspaper and magazines, a day after Apple rolled out a subscription platform for digital media sold through its iTunes app store.
Less talk, more action around Google's Android
BARCELONA, Spain - If the talk at this week's Mobile World Congress fair has been dominated by Nokia <NOK1V.HE> and Microsoft's <MSFT.O> new venture, Google's Android has been the center of the action. As analysts, investors and the press mulled the pros and cons of Nokia and Microsoft merging their smartphone operations, manufacturers were launching Android device after Android device, with Nokia and Microsoft nowhere in sight.
Dell shares jump on strong profit, solid margins
BANGALORE - Shares of Dell Inc <DELL.O> jumped 11 percent on Wednesday, a day after the world's no. 2 personal computer maker reported strong quarterly profits, allaying the fears of sustainability of its margins. At least seven brokerages raised their price targets on the stock.
Motorola's Xoom tablet priced at $799
BARCELONA - Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc's <MMI.N> Xoom tablet will sell for an unsubsidized $799 at Verizon Wireless <VZ.N><VOD.L>, with WiFi-only version priced at around $600 price, chief executive Sanjay Jha said on Wednesday. "Competing with Apple you have to deliver premium products," Jha said, adding Xoom software was also upgradable.
Analysis: Investors tired of waiting for Kodak to develop
NEW YORK - Its name was once synonymous with home photography. Now, Eastman Kodak <EK.N> is struggling just to stay in the picture. The American icon, which coined the once-ubiquitous "it's a Kodak moment" catch phrase, has labored for years to convince Wall Street it can turn a profit as it shifts toward digital technology and away from its ailing film business.
ZTE to bid on Nortel patents, Ericsson "watching"
HONG KONG/BARCELONA - A major Chinese telcoms-network equipment maker said on Wednesday it will bid on patents related to next-generation wireless technology held by bankrupt Nortel Networks <NRTLQ.PK>. ZTE <0763.HK>, China's No. 2 telecoms equipment maker, is eyeing the Canadian company's intellectual property relating to 4G networks, a senior executive said.
IMG to spread Major League Gaming globally
NEW YORK - Major League Gaming, the largest professional competitive video game league, will be expanding to new markets outside North America thanks to a new partnership with IMG, the global sports and entertainment company. IMG, which is run by billionaire private equity investor Ted Forstmann, will boost the profile of Major League Gaming, a league where players compete in video games like Microsoft's <MSFT.O> "Halo: Reach" and Activision Blizzard's <ATVI.O> "StarCraft 2" in tournaments across the U.S. and on the Internet.
Nokia says can tweak WP7, but sees no need
BARCELONA on its phones, but it has no such plans, Nokia's technology chief Rich Green told a developer conference on Wednesday. "We have a right to manipulate user experience, UI, but why would you?" Chief Technology Officer Green said at the event held on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.
Russia's Putin criticizes customs officers' YouTube video
MOSCOW - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Wednesday criticized a group of customs officers for a video clip they posted on YouTube celebrating the lavish lifestyle they say comes with their government jobs. The mock rap video http://link.reuters.com/dyt97r made in the Pacific port city of Vladivostok shows customs officials in sunglasses driving a Rolls Royce and drinking champagne surrounded by scantily clad women.
Alcatel-Lucent sees buoyant U.S. market
BARCELONA - Telecom equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent <ALUA.PA> is bullish about its prospects in the United States this year, after securing big contracts from major operators like Verizon <VZ.N> and Sprint Nextel <S.N>. Robert Vrij, who heads Alcatel-Lucent's Americas business, told Reuters in an interview that the group was gaining market share in the U.S. and expected telecom operators' investments in network gear to grow this year.
