Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Weekend Edition Singapore Asia Pacific World Seoul shares pare loss, end flat amid bargain hunting Reuters - Wednesday, November 24 Send IM Story Print * KOSPI falls on N.Korea worry, but bounce from earlier low * Defence, food makers outperform, Hana Fin rallies * Foreign, institutional investors buy amid bargain hunting SEOUL, Nov 24 - South Korea's stocks pared early losses and ended nearly flat on Wednesday, as investors downplayed the impact from a flare-up of tensions with North Korea, while a rally in Hana Financial <086790.KS> shares lent support. The main KOSPI index finished down 0.15 percent at 1,925.98 points, bouncing off an earlier low of 1,882.52 points, one day after North Korea fired dozens of artillery shells at a South Korean island. "The market is doing very well, given that an island part of our country was attacked by North Korea yesterday," said Lee Kyoung-su, a market analyst at Taurus Investment & Securities. "Looking at both sides' reaction following the firing, further aggression from the North does not seem likely. This prompted buying by both foreign and institutional investors amid searches for bargains," Lee added. Foreign investors were buyers of a net 18.3 billion won worth of stocks, and institutions purchased a net 450.2 billion won. In the past, the negative market impact from North Korean incidents has lasted about five to seven days, according to Kwak Joong-bo, a market analyst at Samsung Securities. In 2006, after North Korea's first nuclear test, it took 5 days for the KOSPI to recover losses. Shares in Hana Financial Group <086790.KS> jumped 7.3 percent at 39,700 won, the highest close in 14 months after climbing for eight consecutive sessions. The group said it will acquire a 51 percent stake in Korea Exchange Bank <004940.KS> for between 4.65 trillion won and 4.75 trillion won. [ID:nSEU003188] Analysts said the Hana-KEB combination would benefit Hana since KEB business has few areas that overlap with Hana's. Defence and instant food makers outperformed. Military equipment producer Victek <065450.KQ> jumped 11 percent and Huneed Technology <005870.KS>, which makes wireless communications equipment for military purposes, rose 4.9 percent. Foodmakers advanced on prospects that some citizens were hoarding food, concerned by the outbreak of war on the Korean peninsula. Instant noodle makers such as Nong Shim <004370.KS> edged up 0.8 percent. But shares in companies that have operations in North Korea declined. Shares in Hyundai Merchant Marine <011200.KS>, the flagship unit of Hyundai Group which owns unlisted North Korean tour firm Hyundai Asan, shed 0.4 percent. Companies that run factories in North Korea such as watch maker Romanson <026040.KQ> retreated 1.7 percent, and apparel producer Shinwon Corp <009270.KS> dipped 2.5 percent on uncertainty over their North Korean business. Trading volume was 445.3 million shares worth 8 trillion won, compared with average daily trading volume and turnover of 326.7 million shares worth 6.5 trillion won in October. The KOSPI 200 Dec futures <KSc1> index rose 4.3 points to 252.3. The KOSPI 200 spot index <.KS200> gained 0.26 points to 252.38. The junior Kosdaq market <.KQ11> fell 1.22 percent to 505.32.
