As if politics, crassly known as "show business for ugly people," doesn't put you under enough scrutiny already, Chen has shifted his discriminating eye from the outfits of entertainers to the likes of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen and her ilk, although he has been far kinder in his choice of words. Tsai, according to the dry-witted blogger, dressed very "understatedly," former Vice President Annette Lu's attire had an air of "pageantry," while Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu's style was quirkily termed "folksy." However, the ultimate "style killer" were the political campaign vests, often in colors of neon orange or pink with red trimmings and with the candidate's name emblazoned on them for good measure, Chen opined to local media. The blogger's opinions, although often hilarious, are not always met lightly. With over 9 million hits to "My Bitchy Personal Opinions" recorded last year, Chen's unique perspective has allowed him to amass a charmed following. However, the full-time fashion critic has also been under intense criticism, especially from the fans of stars he often disparages, such as singers Jolin Tsai and Elva Hsiao. Last year, these fans inundated his site with threats and attacks. While the negative experiences caused him to beware the more easily incited fans, Chen pointed out that admiration and fervent following should not make one blind to blatant faults. "Just because you love someone and are a huge fan, doesn't mean everything that person does is perfect," Chen argued, adding that he would personally never forgive a serious fashion faux-pas just because he loved the person donning it. Chen said people often have beef with the fact that "saying" is easier than "doing," or rather criticizing one's fashion is much easier to do than having great style of your own. To this, the droll Internet personality explained that "saying" and "doing" have always been completely different things and to bridge the distinction was never the point of his blog. To offer constructive criticism, especially regarding the campaign vests, Chen pointed to the example of Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Huang Chao-shun. "I saw Huang on the streets once and she did not have on the vest -- she made her assistant wear it," Chen said, "What a great idea!" As for the male candidates, Chen had one crucial advice: "I just wish everyone would choose better-fitted suits."
