WikiLeaks backers threaten more cyber attacks
LONDON/WASHINGTON - Internet activists defied efforts to end their online assaults against institutions seen as enemies of WikiLeaks on Thursday, promising more cyber attacks on targets starting with PayPal. The campaign to avenge WikiLeaks against those who have obstructed its operations, calling itself Operation Payback, has already temporarily brought down the websites of credit-card giants Visa and MasterCard, and of the Swedish government.
Analysis: Nokia vs Android: Requiem?
HELSINKI - Mobile maker Nokia's Symbian operating system is on the ropes, its lead being stripped away blow by Android blow, but if its new boss throws in the software towel now, the relief will be brief and the scars permanent. Stephen Elop, appointed Nokia's <NOK1V.HE> chief executive three months ago, is due to present his plans to arrest the market leader's decline early next year, and there are siren voices that would have him turn his back on mobile software and focus on handsets.
Sprint users replacing notebooks with tablets
NEW YORK - Sprint Nextel Corp <S.N> plans to expand its tablet computer portfolio in 2011 to court business customers looking to replace expensive laptop computers with the lower cost devices, according to a top executive for the No. 3 U.S. mobile operator. The company's business markets President, Paget Alves, said on Thursday that tablets, which are connected wirelessly to the Internet using networks such as Sprint's are the hottest new gadget among corporate clients.
WikiLeaks shows reach and limits of Internet speech
WILMINGTON, Delaware - U.S. companies are pulling the plug on WikiLeaks and its activists, raising tough questions about cyberspace as a celebrated free speech forum and about government pressure. MasterCard <MA.N>, Visa Inc <V.N> and eBay Inc unit PayPal <EBAY.O> have severed ties with the website, cutting into the funding lifeline of the organization that has published secret government cables embarrassing to Washington.
Stores, shoppers turn to holiday online wish lists
NEW YORK - Manny Gomez created a shopping list on Amazon.com <AMZN.O> just to keep track of some auto parts he wanted to buy. But as the holidays approached, he thought it wouldn't hurt to share the list with family and friends. "It just clicked," said Gomez, who added a selection of shoes, shirts and video games before posting his list online last week. "I said, 'You know what? This would also make a great wish list.'"
Dell CEO says transformation is underway
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Dell Inc <DELL.O> deserves more credit for a gradual but steady transformation from its roots as a computer maker into a full-service technology vendor, an overhaul that will take time, its CEO said. Nearly four years into his second stint as chief of the company he founded, Michael Dell said Dell is becoming more diversified, and aims to be a major player in both data center equipment and the fast-growing mobile market.
Exclusive: Final bids due for Nortel patents: sources
TORONTO/NEW YORK - Final bids are due within weeks for blocks of patents owned by Canada's once mighty telecom giant Nortel Networks <NRTLQ.PK>, including some that could change the balance of power among mobile operators. The rare intellectual-property portfolio sale is part of bankrupt Nortel's auction of assets, most of which have already been sold.
Howard Stern in 5-year deal with Sirius XM
NEW YORK - Howard Stern will be shocking Sirius XM Radio Inc <SIRI.O> listeners for at least five more years, news that pushed the satellite radio company's shares up more than 6 percent. Under a new contract announced on Thursday, Stern will be broadcasting until December 31, 2015, and the shock jock's content will be available for the first time on mobile devices, Sirius XM said in a statement.
EBay not liable on trademark dispute: EU court
LUXEMBOURG - Internet auction site eBay Inc <EBAY.O> is generally not liable for trademark infringements committed by users on its site, a European Court of Justice legal expert said on Thursday, ahead of a final court ruling. ECJ Advocate General Niilo Jaaskinen also said in a non-binding opinion that if eBay was notified of infringement of a trademark by a user who continued to repeat the offence, it could be held liable.
Iran blogger gets prison leave on bail: rights group
NEW YORK - Iran has temporarily released on bail a pioneering Iranian blogger who has been sentenced to more than 19 years in prison, a rights group said on Thursday. Iranian-Canadian Hossein Derakhshan, held in prison in Iran since 2008 on what the media has said are suspicions of spying for Israel, was freed on Wednesday night "on the unprecedented bail amount of $1.5 million," the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reported.
