ADVERTISEMENT The red ink compares with a profit of 483 million yen in the same period of the previous year, but the company said it was eyeing a turnaround, helped by government spending aimed at reviving the battered global economy. NEC, which posted a loss last fiscal year, said severe cost cuts failed to offset a slump in sales in its key North American and European markets, which have been at the centre of the financial storm. The company announced an operating loss of 40.0 billion yen for the April-June period, compared with a year-earlier profit of 4.1 billion yen. Revenue fell 22.3 percent to 778.5 billion yen, it said. Electronics devices and other IT products posted the biggest losses as the company curbed investment and pulled out of large-scale projects. Senior vice president Takao Ono said all of NEC's business segments suffered falling sales but the company saw flickers of a recovery. "The earnings figures in this reporting period were very tough. But we are seeing a steady improvement. All of our business segments are performing better than expected," he said. "The outlook is still uncertain, but we believe we were able to start this fiscal year on a positive note to achieve our targets," he said. NEC left unchanged its forecast to return to the black in the full fiscal year to March, predicting a net profit of 10 billion yen, after a loss of 296.6 billion yen last year. The company has previously announced it is cutting 20,000 jobs worldwide and withdrawing from the personal computer business in North America and Europe amid growing competition from US and Taiwanese rivals. Sales of electronic devices dropped 40 percent in the fiscal first quarter to 122.2 billion yen while those of IT products fell 37.5 percent to 39.1 billion yen. NEC has also been saddled by losses from its chip-making arm NEC Electronics, which on Wednesday logged a net loss of 20.7 billion yen as revenue fell 64.3 percent to 102 billion yen. The ailing parent group is reportedly considering raising funds of about 150 billion yen to strengthen its capital base and to invest in new businesses such as batteries for hybrid vehicles. A spokesman declined to comment.
