US-ENTERTAINMENT Summary
Reuters - Wednesday, July 8
Jackson hailed as greatest entertainer, best dad
ADVERTISEMENT
LOS ANGELES - Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder and Usher sang emotional farewells on Tuesday to Michael Jackson, who was hailed as "the greatest entertainer that ever lived" and described by his tearful 11-year-old daughter Paris as "the best father you could ever imagine." Some 18,000 fans, family members and friends took part in a public memorial for Jackson in the Los Angeles sports arena where the singer had rehearsed the day before his death for a highly-anticipated series of comeback concerts.
Pottermania returns with London world premiere
LONDON - The new Harry Potter film had its world premiere in London on Tuesday, ending a two-year wait for faithful fans who have been counting down the days before its theatrical release on July 15. Hundreds of people braved heavy rain in central London to watch the teenaged stars of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth of eight films based on the novels by British author J.K. Rowling, walk down a sodden red carpet.
Nine Inch Nails to play more farewell shows
NEW YORK - Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor said Tuesday the band will play a final "handful of shows" in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles beginning August 22. While NIN originally planned to stop performing in the U.S. for good after the tour with Jane's Addiction that wrapped June 12, Reznor wrote in a post on the band's website that "the NIN/JA tour felt like we had to rush through sets due to a limited allotted set length and many shows were in daylight -- it just didn't feel right to end NIN that way." NIN also has dates scheduled across Europe and Asia through August 15.
Maroon 5 covering Sinatra for iTunes set
NEW YORK - When Apple asked Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine if he and his band would be interested in recording a classic Frank Sinatra tune, the singer jumped at the chance. "He's definitely one of my all-time favorites," Levine told Billboard.com recently. "He's one of those guys that's just kind of larger-than-life. I always was a huge fan, ever since I was probably about 15 years old."
Chinese pen "instant" Michael Jackson biography
SHANGHAI - Two Chinese writers slaved for 48 hours straight to produce an "instant" biography of late singer Michael Jackson, despite having never met him, a state-run newspaper said on Monday. The book, called "Moonwalk in Paradise", hit the bookshelves over the weekend, the China Daily said, after the authors subsisted on a diet of coffee and cigarettes and worked round-the-clock to complete it.
Phillippe, Kilmer in talks for "MacGruber" film
LOS ANGELES - "MacGruber," the recurring "Saturday Night Live" skit that parodies the action series "MacGyver," is one step closer to going before cameras as a big-screen movie. Ryan Phillippe is in negotiations to star in the feature, with Val Kilmer in negotiations to join the Paramount and Relativity Media production. Will Forte and Kristen Wiig are reprising their roles from the skits.
"Hangover" star Galifianakis considers next move
LOS ANGELES - Zach Galifianakis is in one of the biggest hits of the summer, "The Hangover." Now he's being very careful before he orders his next drink. The actor's name has surfaced in connection with at least three projects, those familiar with the situation have said: Todd Phillips' pregnancy-themed comedy "Due Date"; the laugher "Say Uncle"; and another Phillips project, the supernatural comedy "Man-Witch." All three are set up at Warner Bros.
Jay Leno to roll out in style on new show
LOS ANGELES - When Jay Leno's new 10 p.m. show goes on air in September, some of his vintage cars will be making guest appearances. The host intends to drive his prized possessions onstage some nights. The gambit is one reason NBC is using a larger venue than Leno has been accustomed to. Workers are busy customizing the soundstage once used by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and the Disney Channel sitcom "Sonny With a Chance," both of which have moved out.
Lang Lang, Herbie Hancock in bold Montreux premiere
MONTREUX, Switzerland - Chinese piano virtuoso Lang Lang made his first appearance at the Montreux jazz festival on Sunday, teaming up with veteran Herbie Hancock in an audacious show blending classical and jazz music. The two men dressed in black sat facing each other at twin grand pianos to perform a program ranging from Maurice Ravel to George Gershwin.
Palestinian youngsters make music in former prison
NABLUS, West Bank - Ramzi Abu Redwan says he remembers waiting in the halls of Al-Fara'a prison as a boy, holding his grandfather's hand and staring up at the walls as he waited to see his father, jailed by Israel. Now, those same walls echo, not with the footsteps of Palestinian prisoners, but with music and children's laughter.
