Ted Stevens Wants New Trial After Prosecutors Allegedly Concealed Evidence February 11, 2009 12:42 p.m. EST Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor Washington, D.C. (AHN) - A federal judge has set a Friday hearing on the request of former Alaska Sen.Ted Stevens to have a new corruption trial. The request is based on a complaint from an FBI agent saying prosecutors had tried to conceal evidence and that a fellow federal agent had engaged in an improper relationship with the government's star witness. Stevens was found guilty on Oct. 27 last year, or eight days before election day, of concealing $250,000 worth of gifts, including home improvements, from now-defunct oil services company VECO Corp. in his Senate financial disclosure forms from 1999-2006. An icon in Alaskan politics and the Senate's longest-serving Republican, he lost his re-election bid to former Anchorage mayor Mark Begich. During his trial, errors by prosecutors in their handling of evidence had caused the judge to issue several strong rebukes questioning the integrity of the government's case. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan had also excluded two key pieces of evidence presented by the prosecution: records about former VECO employees Dave Anderson and Rocky Williams, and evidence about a 1999 car swap between Stevens and former VECO chief executive Bill Allen, the prosecution's star witness. According to the New York Times, an FBI agent, Chad Joy, said in a complaint a few days after Stevens was convicted that prosecutors tried to conceal evidence from the court, including sending Williams home without informing the court because the former VECO worker had allegedly done badly in a mock cross examination. A fellow FBI agent, Mary Beth Kepner, who routinely wore pants had worn a skirt during Allen's testimony to give the former VECO chief executive "a present." Stevens, 84, has firmly denied any wrongdoing. He had given an emotional speech late last November in his final address on the floor of the chamber he had worked in for the last four decades. "My mission in life is not completed," he had said. "I believe god will give me more opportunities to be of service to Alaska and to our nation. And I look forward with glad heart and with confidence in his justice and mercy... I don't have rear-view mirror, I can only look forward. And I still see the day when I can remove the cloud that currently surrounds me."
